Is it true you can't jump start a P38 ?

The garage says they have never seen a gear box electronic fault where all drive is lost

Main drive clutches for forward and reverse are engaged manually. However other clutches needed to put drive to the wheels through the box are selected electronically so it is quite possible for ECU failure to cause total loss of drive.

Thanks Datatek .. thats my thoughts on the garage also .... And thats before it has even been near the diagnostic computer !!!!!!
I have been looking though all sorts and found a post that says it could be the selector pin ? ...
Any thoughts on that ?
It is I suppose possible that the operating linkage has come adrift.

I would check the fuses under the drivers seat .I can't remember the one to check but if it blows you're not going nowhere...it happened to me once

Well I got a call just before they closed ... The diagnostic machine for Land rovers didn't pick up anything until they tried to look at the gearbox ..... and it crashed the computer ....TWICE ... LOL
So they couldn't say for sure that there isn't a electronic problem.
But they have agreed with me that they have no idea how this could happen ..... and that there should be a 'feeling' for each gear notch as you go into them ie D , N , R etc but there is nothing ( if that makes sense )

I'm not sure if you mean cable stiffness or spring loaded locating notch.

Gear linkage has come apart.

I don't see what the gearbox that has a selector gone, that would have to be stuck in park or neutral for the car to turn over and start , would make the car only crawl at 2000 or more revs as in first post if its in gear broke you can't start car or if it broke say in neutral it won't go in gear and crawl

Not so, it could have left the box in partly gear, clutch not fully engaged, but as you can still more the lever the park or neutral contacts could be operated. However the fact that it moves could still mean it's something more serious, but you still need the electronics to engage a gear even if the forward clutch is engaged.
