IRD may be bust - anyone know a good LR independant in Northumberland

2001 Freelander 1.8 on 73,000 ish miles
Just spent £500 on getting landy through MOT (failed emissions) and day after parting with cash it started makind a grinding noise from front end + feeling like brakes being applied. Back to garage who sez it's "transfer box". I've asked them to drain IRD oil to see what's in it - waiting to hear on that one.
So... bloke at garage sez he's never done a freelander "transfer box" before (reason 1 not to let him do the job) and (reason 2) doesn't seem to be too sure how to fault find an IRD problem (his diagnosis is based on another one that did the same sort of thing)
When I get it back off him I plan to drop the propshaft off and see what happens in 2wd mode.
Any other advice on how to tell whether the IRD is knackered would be appreciated along with any northerners on here who know where in Northumberland knows their Freelanders (at a reasonable independant cost):(
 
If it were mine I would… With gearbox in neutral:

Lift both front wheels off the ground. Turn one and the other will turn in the opposite direction. Tests front diff in ird. Also checks to see if the front brakes are stuck.

Lift both rear wheels off the ground. Turn one and the other will turn in the opposite direction. Tests rear diff. Handbrake off. Checks if the rear brakes are stuck.

Lift 2 wheels on one side. Turn one and the other will turn in the same direction. Tests connection between front and rear wheels via ird, vcu and rear diff. Handbrake off.

The above isn’t a perfect test as the transmission isn’t under load, but it’s something an owner can do as a starting point. I would also test it to see if it made the noise whilst coasting in neutral (not good for an auto gearbox so only do it for a little bit) and see of the noise changes. As you suggest take the prop off to see if the noise changes/disappears.

hmm [mot] sure he didnt use brake rollers for brake test
 
Quick update - bloke at garage drained IRD oil - absolutely clean, no bits or nowt. Turns out when he put his mind to it the front offside brake calliper was jamming:eek:

If you every have any big job give tees dale landrover a bell I know there far butiv found them usefull when I was in durham I still use them when I can and im in wales
