Hi there am new to the forum, just bought my 2nd landy a 200tdi 90, with a list of things done as you can see in the pics. Bought it from a family friend who has spent £££££'s on it, everything done at a garage etc etc. Any suggestions for some further mods? Am thinking maybe a shadow winch bumper.....Anyways my first problem is the spotlights have been disconnected as the wire used was too thin and overheated apparently, they were connected to the full beam switch. Anyway i re-wired them all with 17 amp wire, fitted a suitable switch etc now the problem i have is do i connect it to the wires which currently feed to a loose relay in the fuse box which i belive was fitted for the spots originally or do i put in another? i have ordered an inline 30 amp fuse also to be safe. Also do i need to wire up a new live to the battery or can i tap into the one off my cd player which has a constant feed from battery?

Cheers for the help

Ali

hi there, i'm after some advice.i've just bought a double cab td5 defender. i think it's le.it has a roll cage but only over the front doors and windscreen.i want to get a snorkel and i was hoping to get a safari snorkel.i'm not sure if this will fit with this roll cage?any help would be good.

Watch the current rating of everything you use. Assuming those are standard 55/60W bulbs in the spots, each one will be drawing 5 Amps, so you need to be able to supply and switch 20A, minimum.

I would run a separate supply from the battery (via a 30A? fuse) to a relay, and power the lights from there. You can use your switch to control the relay. The power for the switch could probably come from any of the main lighting circuits, as it'll draw minimal current (which is the whole idea of using a relay) but the main beam or sidelight circuits are probably as good as any - depends whether you want to use the spots with the ignition off or not.

You need to run a direct feed for the battery (fused as close to the live as possible) then switched and relayed before you go to the lights - dont just piggy back onto the existing wiring as you will be asking for trouble (and shorts etc)

I Have just fitted some , 25amp wire from battery to relay fused 25amp, then 25amp wire splitting into 5 amp wire to the spots. This is to a carlite switch through the ignition .

right so can i keep my 17 amp wire, go from battery to fuse, to relay to switch to lights? am i right? sorry if its easy question, nuts and bolts i can do but dont have a clue with electrics

A quick Google for "wiring diagram for spots" threw this up as the first link:
4x4 Spotlight Wiring Diagram

This particular example shows TWO spots, and how they would be wired relative to your existing headlights. The page continues to describe everything you're likely to need to know...

Scrolling towards the end of the page, it mentions fitting multiple spots, and suggests that you use two relays, one for each pair of lights (as running 26A (4x55W) through a 30A relay is likely to bring trouble). There is a second diagram too. If you switch your lights in pairs like this you will be able to use your 17A wire.

The linked article is a well-written piece, although not specifically for Landies, so I hope it will answer your questions. However, if you find it difficult to follow the diagram, please don't be offended, but I would strongly recommend enlisting the help of someone who can! (Electrics are very easy, but you can do immense damage, very quickly, if you don't know what you're doing.)
