Hello. Looks like a fascinating trip you've got planned. How far have you got with it? You've left Brazil heading southwards - have you started heading north again yet?

We are hanging out in Northern Chile trying to get parts sent over from the UK to repair our dodgy oil cooler. Have searched the net a few times and this forum seems the best for all things Landy.

Thanks for the warm welcome! We shipped the Landy from Port Elizabeth in SA to Montevideo in Uruguay. After 6 months of research the process was relatively pain free. We then drove North to Brazil all the way up the coast almost to the Equator (some awesome beach driving and free camping) then back down to Argentina and to Ushuaia. Since then we have driven north through Patagonia and the Caraterra Austral. In total we have done 32000km's. We originally only planned to do 60 000km's Argentina to Alaska but Brazil is MASSIVE but well worth the effort. :)
Quick question... how do you guys rate Paddocks for spares? We are trying to source an oil cooler repair kit, theres oil in the water.
 
I see - loads of driving around in South America. You must have been over there for quite a while then.

Quite a few of my bits and pieces come from Paddock's. They've always been OK. However a lot of the stuff they send out is 'Britpart' brand, which is not well known for its quality and the manufacturing tolerances are a little vague sometimes, so that even when it's the right part number it doesn't quite fit. If you can specify that you want an OEM brand instead, you should be OK.

And this might sound like a silly question, but you're 100% sure it's the cooler? It couldn't be a head gasket problem could it?

We are 100% hoping that it is the oil cooler. Have done at ton of research and everything points to the oil cooler. There is no water in the oil and no signs of overheating. We will have to see what happens once we repair the cooler, if there is still oil in the water then we know that the head gasket has gone. Any ideas if we can repair the cooler without the repair kit/ We were thinking of opening it up and replacing just the rubber rings which most probably have failed.

We have been touring for 7 months now and the Landy has been superb. There are very few Defenders over here so parts have been an issue.
 
I can't really say because I've not had the oil cooler apart on my TD5. If you mean those circular sealing washers, you might be able to effect a temporary repair by cleaning them up and putting them back together with gasket sealant which might hold for a while. If you're just stuck there you might as well try a little judicious dismantling to pass the time and see what the problem is. You're not going to make it any worse.
