Thread title says it all, but I’d like to sort it.
Last night I disconnected the MAF and the car drove okay, but too soon to say if it will stay that way.

Vacuum hoses look okay.
Intercooler hoses look okay.
No whistles from induction system that I can hear.
Car starts 1st turn of the key and doesn’t smoke.
Top end power brilliant (for an FL1) so I don’t think fuelling is an issue.

What else could I check?
If the air filter lid wasn’t secured properly could that cause the problem? It is a bitch to fit.
Has anyone had any success cleaning the MAF?

As John states above you have found your problem, it's the MAF you could try to give it a clean only use Isopropyl Alcohol, it leaves no residue, even then it may only be successful for a very short while.

Once these MAF go out of spec they have had there day to be honest, don't even think of changing it with an after market cheap one, you will be paying out twice, use only a genuine Bosch one which is in the full unit, Bosch do not sell the inserts only so if you buy just an insert it will be a copy, and will most likely let you down after a short while.

You can use the BMW unit but remove the insert as they have the same insert as the FL1 & the R40 but can cost £20- £60 less, depending on where you purchase the Genuine one from.

Also make sure that the genuine Bosch come is a box with an hologram on it untouched.

We have had a few big debates about these MAF over the years

This maybe worth reading from Brian a wiz guru on the T4 he attached technical bulletin to one of the threads years back.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Feedback today is the car is driving a lot better, so it does indeed look like the MAF is on the way out. It was the intermittent nature of the power loss that had me wondering if it could have been something else.
I've got some MAF cleaner aerosol and will give that a go pro-tem.
