Hi all.

I've just picked up a second hand 05 plate Freelander. After driving it fine for 80 miles, the EML light started to come on above 2500 RPM. When in 5th on the motorway, sometime the light would come on, other times it would be fine and, on a few occasions, the power would just drop and come back a few seconds later with no EML indication. I've read through the forum and can see that it could be down to the fuel filter or the low pressure fuel pump.

The Freelander was serviced in July 15 and I have a receipt for a new fuel filter (Euro car parts - Mann Fuel Filter Metal Type - PN 503670089) so I'm assuming that it is more likely that the pump is at fault. Is that a fair assumption? What's the quality of Euro Car Parts/Mann parts like? Could it be the filter? Is it worth changing the filter first?

Any feedback appreciated!

What's the quality of Euro Car Parts/Mann parts like?
Mann and Mahle are good quality parts ..
they're what you'd get if you bought the filter via a land-rover garage ..
except the box would be labeled land-rover ..

the l.p. pump lasts between 70k to 100k miles aprox.
they are sealed .. not repairable ..
best off getting the Bosch or Pierburg make .. as supplied by LR
cheaper versions don't last long .. ( evidently )

Thanks hd3. So it sounds like i'm in the market for a new pump then.

I've just ordered an ODB2 bluetooth dongle on Amazon which will be here tomorrow. Should I see an error code associated with the dodgy pump?

Thanks.

Should I see an error code associated with the dodgy pump?
sorry i've not a clue when it comes to error codes ..

try a site search .. top right of page ..
the codes have been posted before
( if i've the relevant bookmark i'll post it )

what happens is that .. if the low pressure pump can't supply the pressure on demand
the engine will possibly go into limp mode and the dash light comes on ( i think )
that's to prevent damage to the high pressure pump ..

my l.p. pump .. and / or filter .. failed at 70k ..
( filter was beyond change-by mileage )
i had no dashboard light .. but .. pump became noisier than usual .. and ..
the rpm would hit a brick-wall .. regardless of gear selected ..
at first it wouldn't go past about 3300 rpm .. then at 3000 rpm ..

if you've not seen these pages .. have a read through .. covers most td4 faults

about the 'maf' sensor :

Fuel pump failure does not generate error code because it is dry contact relay. The KV6 engine has no pressure meter in the fuel line. What may generate error code if fuel pressure is low is low level of CO2 in the lambda sensor.

Thanks both.

I think I'll find a replacement pump and fit it along with a new filter just incase.

Drove it again last night and it seems that it only happens when it's warm.

Does that narrow it down?
