As, since a couple of days, I heard a whining/whistling noise in the car I found out that when I switched off the interior fan the noise disappeared, so this afternoon I took it out and oiled slightly the axle of the turbine, after refitting it a short run gave no noise but will see or rather hear what things look/sound like tomorrow morning again. This is no problem for the RHD cars but for us with a LHD it's a pig to get the fan out (and in again), as we have dozens of pedals at that side of the car, in my case one less as it's an automatic:):D:D:D but still..... It's mainly the gaspedal in the way, but by pushing it in completely and fiddling around a little with the unit everything went fine. Have taken a couple of pics to show how it looks like and what it says on the ID sheet. By the way, what's the organisation I have to complain to as there is no sign of any BMW involvement in this ......;)

Update, yesterday there was still a slight whining/whistling but for just a few seconds, this morning nothing, all ok and silent from the start. Had put the fan to 0 and could hear a distant airmovement which is probably the ecubox fan, then put the interior fan to 1 again and no more noise. Looks as the wd40 needed a couple of secs yesterday to smear the whole axe.

Last update, this morning I started as usual, with the knob on the 1 position as always and not a sound I could hear, seems the slight oiling did it's job. I think to have seen in the past members telling there was an undefined slight whining noise coming from the enginecompartment, as they thought. Suggestions were, at that time, made going from the ecubox cooling fan to all other possibilities. In my case the noise seemed to come out of the left hand front vent so it might have been the same origin, the interior fan running dry ?

Should use a liquid grease spray rather than WD40which will clean out any grease.

Will try to remember next time I hear the whistle again. Problem is that I have such a liquid grease spray but there is no long tube with it and as the axe passes rather deep I had to go with the long tube through the fan itself, if spraying the grease I'm afraid most of it would end up in the fan instead of on the axe ??
