Just a quick question for those of you who have got a intercooler upgrade, been looking at the Alisport/ Allards/ Forge motorsport front mounted full size intercoolers for a 300TDI

Was wondering if they make the disco cruise easier at motorway speeds, I mean she has no problem on motorways but just would like to take a little stress off if possible

Also does anyone know if the Intercooler kits that fit the discovery would also fit the defender (would like to change to a defender in a while but couldnt afford to and waiting to get another project finished first)

Thanks for any advice guys!

Havent used the trick ones but have fitted volvo 760 2.3td 'cooler to a non aircon D1 as its a half height full width unit , some small power gain but I dont know about stress . Have you considered using an electric fan on the stock unit ? Done that before with fans from little jap hatchbacks on the inside and D1 aircon model fans on the outside , same as above . Did give considerable help with heavy towing in hot weather with the double fan ....then again that was cooling rad too . Interesting point , the stress ....people usually look at it from a bhp point of view . Debate ?

Not sure about the strress being reduced on the engine, it just will have a bit more power. As immsurre you know all the Intercooler does is cool the air down going into the engine, cooler air is denser so more air in engine, bigger bang. I'm not sure how a bigger bang would reduce stress.

you wont get much more power unless you up the fueling as well. then it will fly!
It will reduce stress because you will tend to run the engine at lower rpms due to the increase in tourque and power, you will also find you have to change gear less and driven sensibly you may even see an improvement in mpg

Of course if you just thrash it it will increase stress!

Isn't the idea of fitting uprated intercoolers to reduce the exhaust gas temp as well? If you increase the turbo boost and tweak the injection pump to increase power you run the risk of melting pistons and damaging the turbo - usually when powering up long hills under load. Lowering the intake air temp helps avoid the problem - I think this was covered in one of the pump tweaking threads along with the recommendation to fit an EGT gauge.
