If its a Petrol, you won't have an Intercooler - it forms part of the Turbocharger system....

Unless of course you have a petrol turbo, in which case I'm talking out of my exhaust pipe....

yep, wish i'd read the above posts before this morning! penny dropped after about 45 mins, and a funny look from my brother in law when i told him what i was looking for! its definately not there! thinking of selling the petrol and buying a diesel now, just so i can clean the intercooler out!

finally got round to doing my intercooler, after taking in the advice on this thread. Intake and outtake hoses and i/c were sitting thick with oil and crap, stripped down, cleaned with some red diesel, and rinsed with a drop of petrol ( just to shift the stubborn bits), dried off and left to air for an hour.

The difference is noticable immeadiately, hardly any smoke and a lot more responsive when given the right boot. Will probably now do it each time i do a filter change.

How long did it take to strip the intercooler off and refit?

to strip it down, only about 10-15 mins. Remove air grill, slam plate, loosen in/out hoses, then undo 4 bolts and lift out. Mine is a 94my, intercooler is a tight fit to lift out, requires a bit of patience, whole thing took about an hour.....perfect for a sunday morning.

So once the intercooler is off.

Do you say, pour 500ml in and cover both ends with palm of hands and shake like hell.

Then, repeat until reasonably clean?

yeah, i washed it through twice with about 500ml of red diesel, good for breaking down the oil deposits. After that i used about 200ml of unleaded to rinse it clean, then left it on its side to dry.

Petrol is good as it will lift the last of the residue, plus it will evaporate dry a lot quicker than diesel. If you can, i would give it a blow through with an airline, removing the last of the fumes before you refit it, just incase of any bangs during startup.

I did mine with about 3 litres of parafin and flushed through 4 times, the first time was really dirty, the last one was pretty clear.

I then attached a hair dryer and let that blow through for about 25 mins, beware if you use the hair dryer on warm/hot blow, the intercooler gets very very hot.

Now my Rangie seems to run a lot better with no smoke, what seems better mpg and a much better engine sound. But could be just me.
