Had a couple of hours to kill on sunday morning so decided to flush the intercooler through. The sh1t that came out was unbelievable, Thick black oil that looked like guiness dregs. Three litres of parafin removed all the black oil deposits, then left a hair dryer in the inlet for ten mins. All went well and now the smoke on launch has almost gone. Also flushed the pipes and hoses and cleaned the cack from the inlet manifold. Drives a lot better now. While i was in there i renewed the cruise control pipes and this now works as it should too. All in all a productive two hours work and all for under a tenner!.:D

how did you remove the intercooler, did you follow RAVE instructions, i.e., remove battery, ecm, battery box and go that way or can you skip most of those steps??

oh, and cruise control pipes - on a diesel??

Hi Wills, didn't bother with the rave cd just got out me spanners and socket set. Removed the slam panel 4 x 13mm bolts and 4 x screws that the front grille is held in with. Turned slam panel upside down and unclipped the bonnet release cable and remove slam panel.
Undid inlet and outlet hose jubilee clips from ic. Removed 4 x intercooler mounting bolts (2 x top and 2 x bottom engine side, bit fiddly)
With hoses removed simply lifted the intercooler out, thats it!
Theres no need to remove all the stuff they tell you on the cd although it is a tight fit to remove but can be done easily enough.

You seem surprised that a diesel would have cruise control. This is my third diesel 4x4 with CC. :brushteeth:

Hello.. ive been wanting to do this for ages...but was a bit scared.. many thanks for the tips... mine has cruse control.. 2.5 dse 1998..

Nice - got to get round to doing mine then!

Well worth doing Rav as it takes very little time to do and the results for a cheap clean are well impressive.

Nothing to be scared of just don't smoke when you do it.:flame: !

Not surprised as my P38 also has cruise control but on the diesel versions of the P38 there were no cruise control pipes - it is all done electronically in the engine ECU rather than with vacuum pressure holding a throttle cable in the set position like on the petrol models.

Can you post up some photos of the pipes you replaced?? Would be interesting to see!

hi

i did mine today, just removed the slam panel, front grill and the battery cover, this will give you plenty access to remove the inter-cooler, the bottom 2 bolts that hold the inter-cooler on are awkward to get at and need a knuckle joint on the socket as for flushing i used paraffin then finished of with red diesel then blow out with a air line then left for 30min to drain

i must note that there was oil in the pipes as well so these need to be cleaned what i did was wet a rag with paraffin and pushed through the pipes two or three times

probably the first time it been done since new 150,000 miles age so should be good for the same again:D

As promised, here is the pic of the replaced pipes.

As you can see they were in pretty good shape except for an inch or so either end.

Both pipes are around 1M long and cost £2 each.

And here they are:

hmm, well that isn't your cruise control - not even the petrol versions of the P38 have that sort of setup for cruise control

See Cruise Control Problems and Solutions for a picture of the cruise setup on a petrol.

Can you provide any closer photos of the thing up the corner where the bubble wrap is, looks alike some sort of fuel filter there almost.

I am 100% sure though that it's nothing to do with the cruise control as its all done electronically on the diesel.

Wonder what it is?! Is there any writing or markings on it??

-Wills :)

EDIT - Wonder if it's gone anything to do with a bio-diesel setup at all - the pipe before the fuel filter has obviously been cut at some point as it should in theory be one long continuous plastic pipe.

hmm, figured it (I think) - it's to do with the EGR system on the 99-> diesel P38's.

Its under the EGR section in Microcat, that little filter is shown along with the other bits and bobs shown in the pics above.

wills, i just had a look on RAVE and yep that is to do with the egr sytem and the cruise system is different on a diesel, it uses the edc for cruise and does not have a cruise ecu or a vacume like a petrol model, also a petrol uses inverter and diesel uses converter whatever that means? that just went over my head lol

This all sounds very interesting, because before i renewed the pipes i had no cruise control, now it works every time. The plot thickens!!!

Just read it myself and what i read was on a 99my which mine is, the actuator is operated via the vacuum hose, one of the hoses i replaced.:scratching_chin:

And doesn't have an ECU!

AHH right, they mean a 99my V8, Still, why would mine work when replacing these hoses? I didn't touch anything else, just read through the cd, assumed they were the same as diesel and went for it.
Now i'm puzzled, pleased but puzzled.

ant lol
see what youve done now lol.. this weekend im now gonna clean my intercooler out and change me little filter cos its a bit rammy...
if you hadnt have started this thread i could have put me feet up this weekend with a few bottles :D
