This is becoming a nightmare already and he hasn't even passed his test yet. He probably will on the 19th but I can't even seem to get a quote for him as a named driver. It seems insurance companies have wised up to parents lying about the amount of use their kids are taking up driving and will now only insure your child as the main driver and policy holder.

I spoke to someone at Adrian Flux who advised me to get an old Series for him and insure him on that. It would cost about £1200. However, he doesn't want an old Land Rover and I can understand that.

Fair advice from AF but I don't have the space for another car at the house nor the time and skill to keep it on the road, be it a Land Rover or Ford Fiesta.

Any tips on getting my lad insured on my 04 Freelander? I uses the thing all day every day so it really will be occasional weekend and early evening use.

I know this has been done to death but it's driving me to distraction.

Do like everyone else and get him a starter car. Fiesta/Clio etc and get him to start building up his own driving history. Last week a friends Daughter insured a 1.2 Clio, 16valve on an 02 plate for £948. She is 19.

Hi
My daughter is 17, and has her own car and own insurance. The only issue is, she has a tracker fitted as part of the deal, and it's still over £2k for the first year, but will be halved by year two. She pays £200 a month, at a struggle, but she will build her no claims that way. It's pretty much the only way these days. :(

the trouble is they class all kids the same and they are not if you had only seen what I did last night down on a beach in Ireland I would not insure any of them but the you go up the road and see a young lad driving a tractor probably better than some old ones ,sorry I can not help the only thing I can say consider a bigger excess. and third party but you will definitely need a old car for that

why go fully comp

with an old car its not worth the cost and reduced cover will cut the premium in half (at least it does here in France)

Mines cheaper fully comp I just have a large excess for damages to my own vehicle as I would fix it myself this dropped my premium quite alot and I gained windscreen cover and some other things by doing it

There is usually very little difference between fully comp and third party in UK.

Forget Fiestas and other wee small cars that all teenagers drive, you will probably get lower quotes on less desirable cars like mid sized saloons that kids dont see as cool. Vectra, Mondeo etc....

Other than that, suck it up and pay it....you are not the only one in that boat.

Looked at a '98 Ford Fiesta. Fully comp for him has come out £1761.

I think I have answered my own question.

Try a quote with him as main driver/owner and add additional experienced drivers as second drivers, this reduces the insurance due to the car being occasionally driven by the second experience drivers. My son has 4 additional drivers on his policy reduced it by about £400 plus i get to use it when i want.

Well he passed his test on Wednesday and is now the proud owner of a Ford KA. A 2002, 1300cc, with just 56,000 miles on the clock. It has 12 months MOT and 6 months tax, just £750.

More importantly we got it insured fully comp for £1440.

A result me thinks...
