I always understood that if you had the clause on your insurance (fully comp or otherwise) allowing you to drive other cars then you could on a third party basis as long as it was already covered by someone elses insurance, normally the owner and, of course, taxed and tested.
However, i have heard that the other car does not need to be covered by other insurance and you can still drive it on yours.
Can anyone actually confirm this one way or the other for certain (not just rumor.)

the car does need to be insured, taxed and tested and used with the owners consent or you could just go out, snatch a car, mess someone up and still be insured third party.
normally you will only have third party on another car:rolleyes:

it also stops scrotes buying a metro, insuring it for £40 a year fully comp, then buying a subaru in someone elses name and driving it as a borrowed car

i'm fully comp with lancaster, don't get third party on other cars so it's back to adrian flux next month

I used to have motor trade insurance that allowed me to drive any vehicle whether mine or anyone elses. Wasn't all that expensive really.

Check the policy again. Either you have specified that vehicle, in which case it's insured, or your insurance will cover you for "any other motor vehicle with a valid insurance policy in force". A vehicle you are driving is now legally required to have some form of insurance policy on specifically it, it's the new (ish) measure to try and combat uninsured drivers, so they can see and immediately identify people who are uninsured by the number plates of the vehicle. Wafty, i think you might be uninsured to drive it!

OK, but check yer policy carefully - the law changed a couple of years ago and i have a feeling this is incorrect now.

Which insurer are you with?

People have been known to be stopped by the rozzers because their car is not shown as insured on the national database. If you're driving such a car but your insurance does cover you it'd probably take some explaining to the usual thicko pc plod. I never got pulled when I had trade insurance but it was in the back of my mind so I used to carry a copy of my insurance certificate just in case.
