The instrument panel only is lit up when the lights are turned on… this is the norm? Or should the instrument panel be lit up at all times?

Correct. As designed it is assumed that you only need dash illumination when the ambient lighting is dark enough to put car lights on.

Good to hear… Anyone improved the brightness of the instrument panel lighting? I assume it is bulbs that could be upgraded to led?

I'd love to be able to dim the instrument lightning when driving in dark. It's very bright actually.

So much brighter than mine. Mine might be a quarter of that… too dim. Need to replace bulbs behind the heater controls and figure I might as well upgrade the rest of the lights as well…

Haynes says the later models, I assume they they mean facelift, don’t have bulbs. LEDs are fastened and the whole panel needs renewal if they die. It does not mention anything about dimming functions…

I will survive. I do need to take out the center console and replace the heater control bulbs anyway. No light there at all…

You Can. The button next to the mileometer reset button dims the dash illumination

That's what I tried of course, but it doesn't do anything. Pushing, turning...nothing. Tried searching the manual but not a word about dim function. Mine is 2004 TD4 Sport, European model, lhd.
