Morning All, Can anyone offer some tip's or tricks for cleaning the inlet manifold. Its full of black oily gue, from the EGR .

Was planning on using some Mr Muscle or Flash oven cleaner and leaving it over night.......... Are there any no no's or must do's ?

Any advice welcome, cheers :)

take it off the engine, fill a bucket with paraffin and leave it to soak for overnight, most of the crap will come out in the paraffin. then I'm afraid its toothbrush and paraffin time.
when its as clean as you want it rinse it with water til you cant smell paraffin anymore ( this is REALLY important) then leave it to dry and refit with a new gasket.

:hijacked: I'm also planning on doing my inlet and intercooler this weekend after binning the egr, can i ask why it's important to make sure the paraffin is cleaned out? What will happen if not? Sorry to butt in DN but am intrigued!

its important to make sure the paraffin is fully cleared out as by sucking something like it in with the air the engine can start on a - bugger forgot the word, anyway itll run on and on til it might go bang, a bit like suckin oil thro the piston rings.
never seen it happen but have been assured its possible - personally I dont want to risk it for a bit of water and cleaning - but you takes your chances

Jaysus! Have heard of the oil getting past the rings and detonating... Right, surgically clean it is then!! Thanks mate.:)

Thanks trax99, sounds like a better plan of attack, dont think the wife would have liked me using all the kitchen products :) not planning on using the landy this weekend. So have plenty of time to spend with a :brushteeth: beats watching strickly or the other ****e on telly

not hard..... i took out my intercooler gve it a scrub, poured hot water and washing up liguid through it to remove most of the air filter then left it in the sink with boiling water and washin up liquid for an hour then flushed through with boiling water

the other option for cleaning out the intercooler is fill it with paraffin ( good stuff it is) and leave it to soak then flush and dry as with the inlet manifold.

Do not use oven cleaner or anything containing caustic soda ! It disolves aluminum ! Use paraffin and let it dry before replacing.

Hi , i did both my Inter cooler and manifold (blown turbo) a couple of weeks ago and used the Parrafin approach. which used up 5ltrs of the stuff as i filled up each item by a third gave it a good shake covering the inlet outlet holes and emptied and then repeated this pretty much gets all the grap out. if you leave in a warm place to try the parrafin evaporates quickly or use a hair dryer.
