Can I assume I have my drill bit in the correct hole ? And how do I know the drill bit has gone deep enough to be sure the holes are aligned correctly ?

What will happen if I miss the correct hole, then relase the internal bolts and advance the pump ? Worst case scenario ?

Currently I have the hole sat at around 3 o'clock if that makes a bit of difference ?

Ok, I reckOn I have nailed it, the adjustment went as I guessed it would after speaking with you the other day James, pretty sure I have done it right, gonna try it up the road now and see if I broke it lol
 
Ok seems better, so really the only purpose of the drill bit and hole is to stop the back plate spinning with the front yes ?

When we spoke you said about inserting smaller drill bits to get more adjustment, I am maxxed out on an 8mm ATM, is there a typical point considered as the maximum advance ? Ie should it never be maxxed out on less than a 7mm bit for example ??

Hope my above observations are correct lol
 
If you were still getting lots of knock but had the timing retarded a fair way and as a result had poor power, whats going wrong ?

If I max out the 7mm and still find it slightly sluggish with no significant smoke signals where else could the problem be ?
 
to check for problem you need to know timings correct ,good clean fuel to pump no air,turbo hoses on both side sunction and pressure are right,if adjusting fip dosent help you will need to check timing as a whole is spot on bearing in mind pumps been off,if you can put clear pipe between filter and front banjo on pump,to check for constant clear fuel,boost pipe between turbo and top of fip,check front banjo has large hole and rear has small
 
ok maybe I have screwed something up then, just inserted a 7mm ready to wind it forward a little further, but I am reaching the stops of the bolts, regardless of what size drill bit is inserted, looks like I am doing something wrong with this.
 
Slacken the 3 bolts, and advance without the bit in if you need to advance it a little further. Think I had to advance mine by about 5mm. As James says, if it's knocking, you've gone too far.
 
I really am at the bolt stops, might try to back it off to full retard and see what the difference is, maybe the engine is already knocking but I have not realised it !!!

Engine is not exactly quiet but been a long time since I had my 200Tdi.
 
You'll know if its knocking...it'll also rev really freely aswell, slightest touch of the throttle. How is she running? Also, from memory, when the engine is at TDC, the drill bit slotted in at the 10 o'clock position on mine.
 
if you can run upto louth i can check it for you ,it sounds as if you got to start with basics and make sure timing is right with cam etc first
