ill get my beloved disco running again one day :(
my problem now is thus. im on pump 3 so far which turned up minus the highlighted part in the picture. so i took it off another pump and just put it on, should this be set at a specific place or timmed to the pump? i know the pump has to be timed to the engine. this pump is now getting fuel to the injectors but it still wont start?? and ontop of this the pump is leaking form under the area highlighted in yellow. what should i do guys?? im at my whitts end with it.

I assume you mean the red highlighted bit was missing (rather than yellow)? If it is the red bit (I'll call it a drive flange for want of the correct name) then its positioning could be critical if the flange isn't positively keyed to the shaft by a woodruff key or similar method. If it is keyed I would think you should be ok as most manufacturers would try and standardise these sort of things to keep costs down. As for the leak from the yellow area (throttle spindle shaft?) then I think there are other threads on here about potential fixes. Looks like you have been having fun and games getting it running again, have you defiantly checked cam timing is correct (as well as pump)?

i used the locking kick on the timing pully but im unsure how to check the timing. before i locked the pullys i set it at TDC and used the fly-wheel lock along with the drive pully locking tool.

That will ensure the crank and fip are timed correctly but not the cam, only way to check cam timing is to remove timing chest front cover. PM me with an email address and I'll send you a copy of the service manual which might explain things a bit clearer.

Are you sure that the engine is timed at the CORRECT TDC (cylinder number one on the compression stroke not on the exhaust stroke)?

To do it properly means checking the cam timing, however you could try taking the rocker cover off, if you look at no 1 cylinder rocker arms they should both be stationary for the last 1/4 of a crank turn before you get to TDC. If one of them moves (and cylinder 4's rockers don't) then you are timed to the wrong TDC. After all the faffing around you have had with pumps in and out the best thing to do would be bite the bullet and check the cam timing, use the opportunity to check timing belt, tensioner etc. Once you know it is all correct then that is a lot of potential possibilities eliminated.

Sorry retrocarman I was away for a few days and didn't check on the forum. Take the front cover off. It will only take the best part of an hour. When the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke (on cylinder number 1), the mark on the camshaft pulley (at around 7 o clock) should line up with the pointer).

To coectly set the drive flange you will need to use a dtc gauge set correctly for your engine !! It fits into the rear of the inj pump !! It's not something most people would have laying around !! You will have to take inj pump to a diesel specialist to have it set !!! Until its set in the right place your ****ing into the wind !!!!
