Hot topic on the US forums these days is induction cleaning. Basically the fuel path and injectors as far as I can follow, and its all the rage to get it done professionally while pooh poohing DIY additives. What do we think about that then?

Sounds like a good money maker if you can get somebody stupid enough to pay you to do it. Some off the shelf injector cleaners work pretty well actually. If you put them in when tank is low, as opposed to the add to a full tank instruction, the difference is quite noticable.

A couple of years ago (on another forum) I read recomendations to simply add a litre of methylated spirit to the tank occasionally. Any comments from this forum?

Don't know about the Meths but have heard of adding a little Acetone to diesels or a moth ball in petrol engines believe it or not.

well iv added a bottle of redex to a full tank an it really didnt do any thing noticable. are they just a waste of money or do they do somthing.

I hate to think what meths or, even worse, acetone could potentially do to the seals in the injector pump.:eek:

More than likely not a lot in very dilute quantities. I am sure i have seen Acetone as one of the ingredients in Diesel injector cleaner. Since the advent of unleaded petrol seals and pipes are now made from synthetic rubber as the additives in it destroyed normal fuel lines. Diesel seals are more than likely no different. Not that i am thinking of pouring a gallon of Actone in any time soon. But an egg cup full might do the trick, but let someone else try it first. After hearing the moth balls tale many years ago, to my great surprise Mythbusters did recently prove they actually worked in petrol engines, appearing to increase the octane rating.

Yankee snake oil.:D

Maybe, but lots of things are discovered by accident. Like when one of Francis Bearts mechanics accidentally fitted a under sized inlet gasket to the carb on a Manx Norton and got a silly increase in power because of the turbulance it caused. Not all old wives tales are fictional.

Mothballs??

some one care to enlightin me?

Once upon a time my old grandpappy told me that in the war because the petrol you could get was ****, he used to put moth balls in his petrol tank and the car ran better. Mythbusters tried this and the end result was the engine appeared to run better with them, than it did without them. It apparenly improves the octane rating. Don't ask me why, but it does appear to work. Maybe you could try it and let me know how you get on. Repair bills to Mythbusters Co Discovery channel.

Thank you for that, always prefered the 500T myself.

Some of the guys on the bio forum use acetone as a cetane booster...not sure of quantities but dont think its a lot....asfor the rubber componants most made after 98 ish should be made of Viton so are fine with just about anything thrown at them.:)

Well I tried it. Friend gave me a pair of tablet-form injection cleaners that you drop into the tank before filling. Used 1 with just 20 litres of fuel and when that was consumed popped in the second with 40 litres. It really does seem to have made a difference. The car runs smoother and definitely has more zip. I used Dyno-Tab Plus injection cleaners from the US.

More than likely a very expensive form of Moth Ball.

inject some redex into the cylinders when you do a plug change, let it soak for 15/20 mins then fire it up see how much crap comes out the back end,i done it a while ago on a mates car, reckons it runs better now than when he bought it 3 years ago;)
