Hi I’ve got a 2003 td4 automatic freelander. The temperature gauge is staying at around a quarter which leads me to believe that the thermostat is stuck open and it’s supposed to be a pig of a job to replace (I’m no mechanic) I’ve read some of the forums and they all suggest putting a in line thermostat in the top radiator pipe which looks easy on the videos but I’m really struggling to push the thermostat in. Its the same size thermostat as everyone recommends but it seems like my radiator pipe is smaller maybe cause it’s a automatic. Can anyone help as the next step is the scrap yard as I can’t keep throwing money at it.

The auto pipe is smaller, and it's a pain to get the stat in. You just need to persevere. It took me about 45 mins and a sliced hand to get mine in. Use a bit of plastic waste water pipe on a flat surface on the body of the stat and slide the hose down

I’m happy to tell you that the mod worked it took some getting in but I used some waste pipe and plumbers grease and it squeezed in just. Thanks for the advice
