Hi guys.... This may be a rather silly question, but I was always taught that if you don't know them ask. I've had to replace the fuel tank on my 1974 S3 SWB (2.25 petrol).

I noticed that when I lifted up the driver's seat to disconnect the pipes etc that their is an in-line filter, but what suprised me was that this appeared to be almost empty - I assumed that this would be full of petrol rather than full of air?

Anyway, I have changed the tank over and all appears to be well, The filter was originally clipped in horizontally, I have now temporarily put it back in vertically and it seems to have a bit more fuel in than before
is this correct, and if not how do I go about bleeding the air out of it?

I tried a search , but nothing seemed to explain this?

Thanks

Oh

Ive been working on mine as shes starved of fuel. Replaced the lift pump, was mucky anyways; changed the inline filter between the lift pump and carb and about to strip the carb as issue still there.
Now I hadnt thought of a filter close to the tank :-0 Ill be looking under me seat in the morning

It might not be air but ethanol vapour. I've wasted hours bleeding mine until I had it pointed out (by an American where they've had this for longer) that fuel now has 5-10% of ethanol added and this evaporates at a lower temperature and fills the filter with vapour.

This doesn't cause huge problems but can cause vapour lock and can reduce the efficiency of the lift pump (it's bolted to the engine and so hot and is trying to pump bubbles instead of fuel).
