Impending doom of Road tax on a 2001 TD4

I have just had to renew the road tax on my 2001 freelander. It has gone up by £30 from last year to £245 for the 12months tax.

I have had a look on some websites and it looks as if next year it will be going up to £425 (Tax band L emissions 226-255 g/km) the TD4 is 240g/km.

Apparently my car is only temporarily in the Tax band K (emissions 201-225 g/km) for this year only! Up to April 2011, to help us struggling families or some such crap.

Any one else know about or have any thoughts on this?

The way they keep on messing with the road tax system it wouldn't suprise me, it was due to rise from £215 to £245 but i cant see it going up to £425 on band L, they will introduce another exemption for veichles emitting more than 225g/km and first registered between 1-3-2001 and 23-3-2006 as they have done all other years - would make interesting reading how many cars this would affect.

It would be helpful if they did just say "we will be putting the road tax up for all new cars, but we will keep the exemption in place for older ones" but its about as likely as pigs flying...

Of course its our fault for driving around in highly polluting cars, maybe we should all step out of older British made cars, trade them in for a hybrid imported from the far east and has been sailed half way round the earth to get here that have HUGELY polluting batteries on board (that only last for 6-8 years) - or is that just me???

I do hope it isnt going to be £425. I only do about 3000 miles a year!!! I used to have a Volvo T5 estate that did about 28 to the gallon on a run now I have a more economical car and it is to be taxed more!!! Madness. The 2001 limit is silly, as Fake Elvis says it should just be new cars. Its not on to retrospectively change the road tax rules.

I used to drive about 40,000 miles a year and still think road tax should be added to fuel. Then the most polluting cars and driving styles would pay more 'road tax'! That would be a much farer system and one that is difficult to avoid. OK so we would need to display on the windscreen your Insurance and Mot although all that is now computerised anyway.
 
The FL1 TD4 manual emits 205 g/km for CO2 emissions. Therefore, it's in band K, not L. The Parkers guide states:

"Please note: All cars registered between March 2001 and March 2006 that produce more than 225g/km CO2, will temporarily join Band K in 2009 and 2010."

The FL1 TD4 manual is safely in band K which means it will cost £245 a year. Last time I checked, the TD4 auto is not safe, and it's likely that those who own a TD4 auto registered after march 2001 will have to pay much more at some point because the auto has worse CO2 emissions.

FL1 TD4 Auto: 240 CO2 (g/km) (Band L*)
FL1 1.8 Manual: 248 CO2 (g/km) (Band L*)
FL1 2.5 V6 Auto: 298 CO2 (g/km) (Band M*)

*Temporarily in band K for 2010.

RichM - I would take anything what Parkers say with a pinch of salt - when i "worked in the trade" (ie: flogged new cars) they were seen as useful as wheels for a tomato, see the comments on the base of the article...

...being a td4 auto owner i hope it stays the same!

Yes, but it wont affect your road tax :p

Get a good drill bit (HSS), and dam around the rivets (blue-tack or similar) in oil or water to keep cool when drilling.
 
Rich is right, the autos are at risk & we don't know yet whether they'll get another stay of execution or go to band L next year. unfortunately the old labour government only postponed it to get them by the election because there was a huge outcry when people finally realised the scam they were trying to pull. Only "X" platers & commercials aren't affected by this.
As for the wishbone, I've done both the drill out the balljoint to renew it, & replaced the complete wishbones. It's no contest, wishbone replacement is by far the easiest way to go.

This article is inaccurate. I have just confirmed with the DVLA that the following is not true:

"Please note: All cars registered between March 2001 and March 2006 that produce more than 225g/km CO2, will temporarily join Band K in 2009 and 2010."

DVLA confirmed that cars registered between 03/2001 - 03/2006 will remain in band K after 2010 (obviously subject to future budgets). They have not joined this band temporarily.

DVLA confirmed that cars registered between 03/2001 - 03/2006 will remain in band K after 2010 (obviously subject to future budgets). They have not joined this band temporarily.

The Freelander TD4 Auto is not in Band K. I think the confusion is caused by the fact that anything above Band K is currently subject to being priced at the same rate as Band K. This was initially planned to be a temporary measure by our previous government. At the moment, I think I'm right in saying that nobody really knows how it will plan out in the future. Sure, it's safe for the next year or so.

The question remains, will this change. If so, when? I don't think anyone knows for certain right now. Though, I personally wouldn't find that to be very reassuring.

Exactly & they don't say whether the auto which emits band L levels will either stay in band K or move to band L for 2011. As Rich says, at the moment none of us knows what's going to happen in 8 months time. I only found out about all this a few days after buying my Td4 auto & it's been on my mind for the last 2 years. Just need to wait & see.

To follow up on what you've said, you're quite right & it would appear that the DVLA have now ammended the wording on their website and finally removed the word temporary. Apologies to yourself for my doubts but this has been playing on my mind since just after I got my car & finally I can now relax & try to keep it for a while. Please someone else take a look & let me know that we can finally forget about this whole thing & that I'm not imagining it.
