I'm in love with my landrover series and have spent ages wax oiling servicing etc . She ain't pretty but the again neither am I 😊

I've tried to do everything over and above with a view to getting her to last.

I want to change all the oils and breathers but to be honest not sure where they all are or really how to do it

Is it a bit like final driver on motorbikes I. E nut at top and one at bottom and fill unroll it spills out ?

Is there any hints tips like how much oil will I need

It's worth downloading the service manuals from the web google "land rover manuals pdf" the first section has loads of info on servicing and has capacities listed somewhere near the front.

There's lots of nipples to grease in various places, props, steeing arms, and don't forget steering box, swivel balls, etc.

The gearbox, transfer box, diffs, swivel balls are as you say undo both nuts to drain, replace bottom one and pour into top one until it runs back out.

pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com for the S3 manual. 20/50 mineral for the engine, EP90 (or 80/90) GL4 for pretty much everything else. Don't use GL5 'cos it might bugger up any bronze bits in your gearbox. Lithium grease for everything else - Castrol LM or similar. Axle breathers come in two types, either an extension pipe (blow through to clear) or a valve assembly on the top of the axle case (unscrew, clean in solvent, blow through and replace.) My local B&Q has LM grease and 20/50 oil at cheap prices at the moment.

Cheers

I've done the engine just got the rest to do, not sure what I'm doing but gonna try and figure it out this weekend

Hi biker

start with doing one unit at a time and undo the filler plugs first before undoing the drain plugs as if you can't undo the filler plugs you won't be able to fill the unit up with oil and make sure the car is on flat ground before you start ;)

gearbox

1, drain plug is on the under side of the g/box

2, filler plug is on the left hand side of the g/box about 1/4 the way up the g/box ( 1/2" square plug )

3, with the filler plug removed fill the g/box till the oil comes out from the filler plug hole and let the excess oil drain off before you refit the filler plug.

transfer box

1, drain plug on the under side of the transfer box on the transfer box sump.

2, the filler plug is at the back of the transfer box near to the hand brake drum ( small square plug )

3, again with the filler plug removed fill the transfer box up till the oil comes out of the filler plug hole and again let the excess oil drain off before you refit the filler plug.

axles

1, drain plug under each diff ( big round plug with a slot in it )

2, depending what diffs you have some diff fill from the front ( 1/2" square plug ) and some fill from the rear but on left hand side ( looking at the diff from the propshaft end normally a 3/4 spanner will do but can differ )

3, again with the filler plug removed fill the diff up till the oil comes out from the filler plug and let the excess oil drain out before refitting the filler plug.

overdrive ( if fitted )

1, drain plug on the under side of the overdrive unit.

2, filler plug on the top of the overdrive unit ( inc dipstick )

3, make sure the filler plug undoes first.

4, fill the overdrive till it reaches the full level on the dipstick / filler plug.

job done and good luck :)

so how many litres of oil do i need in me 10j engine before i start it as ive got 5 litres in at the moment after a full rebuild and i dont want it going with a bang

from memory its about 6 lts or there abouts just make sure the dipstick can't be pushed down any further than it has to and or the dipstick tube hasn't come loose and can be pushed further in, there are two types of dipsticks and tubes one tube is a screw in type and the other is a pressed in type predded i ones tend to come loose after time and can give falls readings and i think diesels have a longer dipstick than petrols have so again will give a wrong reading :)
