hi guys / girls
not been on in a while because i owned a bmw for a bit but ive bought another land rover - got a 2000 td5 disco this time
bought it very cheap with a knocky bottom end
i made the mistake of driving it & it has chucked a conrod end out through the sump
will keep you posted on what i find when i remove the sump !!
if any of you like predicting - give me an idea on what im likely to find when i remove sump ???
btw its running fine on four now with no knocks lol
great to be back & thanks for not cancelling my account
looking forward to the response - have really missed this forum

Have not had that experience with a Land Rover, but last year I bought a Toyota V6 Hilux that had broken a conrod in number 6 cylinder due to it being hydrauliced after driving through a deep creek, I found after stripping it down I was able to repair it with a few hundred dollars worth of second hand engine parts, (piston, conrod, gaskets).
In the case of your Td5 you will find most probably that you'll need a crankshaft re-grind, and it may only require replacement of a conrod, and set of bearings.
A lot will depend on how much damage has been done to the cylinder block by the flailing broken bit of the conrod, which I think you will find will be friction welded to the crank, (usually the cause of it breaking after the "knocking" thing, big end bearing failure).
All the above only applies if you can do all the work yourself, as an engine reconditioner shop will only do the job as a full recondition for obvious reasons, they would have to warrant the work.
But my Toyota worked out just fine and runs really well again, the guy I bought it from had been quoted thousands to fix the engine, the engine job cost me about $350 Au, now I have a great back up vehicle for when my Disco needs to go to "sick bay".

thank you for your reply - i will post pics of the mess once i remove the sump - luckily im pretty handy with the spanners so hopefully it does not cost too much to repair
i refuse to buy a recon engine & spend thousands - so if the worst comes to the worst i will buy another td5 thats rotten & runs & pull the engine out of it

Id just buy another complete engine. 10P TD5,s are two a penny on fleabay.
Get one that you can hear/see running first, then do the usual service stuff to it, prob incl injector seals.
Rebuilding a TD5 can be an expensive exercise!
Mark

ok thanks for the advice mark - just trying to find a decent engine or maybe thinking of trying to find a complete disco with a rotten rear end ( mot failure )
