As a temporary repair until Stu can get back to you why not run a wire from the 12v+ battery to coil via a switch (or inline fuse) which you can use to kill the feed to the coil when not in use?

no its a 12 volt coil stu said, if es wrong then would that explain it starting then stopping when I ran that wire from the solenoid?

I am just thinking now , hes resoning for it being a 12v coil may have been that threre was no ballest resitor which he though they had as standard but they dont do they , they have a ballest wire hmmmm

I do have a spare 12v coil

what shall I do?

I may have to , I have been getting the wife to touch the +coil wire to +bat when starting lol

as memory serves, there is a ballest wire,i trapped mine under the right hand rocker cover and burnt it out.i ran another wire[not ballest resited] to a seperate resister to drop the voltage to 9 volts[i was burning points out regularly].this solved my problem.i hope this heips,as i said from memory,it was a long time ago.

thanks, i am running lumention so no points to burn lol. stu fitted both starter and lumention- i wish i had watched more now so i would have a clue what was what

you wouldnt have ballast feed with 12v coil,as i said earlier they where fitted as aid to starting 9v coil as is system when starting ,ballast feed to keep coil at 9v while rest is 12v,try and use some logic

Hi John,

I've been away and missed your call. Sorry M8 I'll call you on Sunday.

One piece of advice though. Stu's red wire must be attached to the soleniod as this is the power feed to the solenoid.

thanks chris , please do!

james , I know that bit- although thats about all I do know, I am going out in mo to see what coil it is exactly!

ok just been out , looked all over coil and no sign of voltage.

got it started using the wife with wire trick and with my multimeter set to v20 and with the engine running I was reading about 5 volts at the coil , wavered a bit between 4.8 and 5.5.

so does that mean I have a 6v coil?

ok been out with a mirror and read the bottom of the coil its a lucas 16c6 which I am guessing is a 6v jobbie?????

I am feeling there are alot of crossed wires in many ways on this job and my best option is to keep "jump starting it" untill stu comes back to sort his job out as too many cooks and all that.

interesting its a 6v coil though, any merrit in fitting a later 12v one? I have one here going spare you see.

Thanks for all your input guys

sounds like a good plan, I will let him do that as I dont want to bugger his job up half way through if its more than just a spade connector!

any ignition live usually white with no stripe is straight ignition live ,not having been through other use .run wire from under dash to coil if no other nearer

thanks for the advice but I dont want to go cutting/plicing under dash wires for two reasons:
1. its stus job to sort and this goes further than spade connectors

2. I am not compentant electronicly to be messing with live wires int he car I'v just finished and risk damgae of any sort. my skills are in fabrication and reasonable mechanics. I am orignally a shipwright by trade you see.

fair enough .but you could just use wire with clip to pop on + battery terminal to + coil to run it and remove clip when you wanted to stop it,till later proper fix

yeah thats what I will do for starting but I cant leave it connected all the time or it will cook me 6v coil with 12v :p
