I'm trying to piece my series diesel back together. My steering column has a cover over the hole for the lock. Is there somewhere else for the switch on a s3? (it's a bit of a 2a/3 mixture)

Sounds like the steering cover is for a series 2. The series 3 has a hole for the ignition switch and another for the engine cutoff control (I think)

Thanks. Do the diesels have larger terminals on the back than petrol?

The diesel switch has different terminals as the switch has different settings. The diesel has another setting in be tween 'on' and 'start' for the glow plugs
You can use a petrol ignition switch on a diesel with a bit of ingenuity, diesel switches are stupid expensive but with a multimeter you can work out which terminals you need and just wire the glow plugs up to a separate switch......I have the relay from an old disco on mine wired to a toggle switch.
