could some extra tell me where I am going wrong, I have stripped the lock down of the ignition , the key goes in and pulls all the blades back but when inserted into the main metal part, it fails to turn unless I press the steering lock button down. I am stumped. Any help welcome desperately . I am frustrated!

Ok. I got it but it took me some 6 hours. Just in case anyone else has the same problem, i'll mention it here. Bearing in mind many of you on here are brilliant mechanics, this is for those of you who are like me and not very good.
When you are reassembling the lock mechanism, start from the opposite end from the key. Make sure that each component added engages correctly before adding on further. I think what was happening was that when I was assembling the barrel, the key was not able to push down far enough to clear the barrels casement.
I hope it helps.

Could anyone tell me what that micro switch that is screwed to the barrel is for and how it is activated. Thanks.

If you mean the black box with the black and white wires as shown in the picture below, I believe it is the switch to activate the "key in ignition" warning chime when you open the door.
