Hello!
My Discovery 1 -98 has been parked a while due to starting issues.
It began with it being a little hard to get started, but when it dit it ran fine. It slowly became worse until one day it didnt start at all. It cranked and fired some but dit just not start. Then life happened and it stod for a year.
Now Im determined to get it rolling again, but need some help and input to come further.
So far:
1. Fresh battery, engine cranks without any signs of fireing, not even with a spray of easy start gas sprayed into it (exhaust smells of fuel after trying, so it gets fuel).
2. Checked the plugs for spark -no spark.
3. Measured the ignition coil with ignition switched on: only 1-2V.
4. Replaced coil and ignition module, measured again and still only 1,24V at the coil (+ and -). Battery is 12,5v.
5. While working I found an old wire drawn from the battery area to the area of the coil. Coil end had connection to fit the coil. Obviously previous owner had similar problems...
6. Plugged this cable in (temporary) and got some signs of fireing up while cranking.
What I intend to do now:
-replace plugs (because they are all black and covered with soot, probably because of poor ignition), connect the dodgy cable in and see if it starts.
But then what...?
I can't drive the car with the coil connected directly to the battery, can I? Why doesnt the coil get enough volts?
Should I be concerned about the infamous spider?
Thank you all for ANY input!
/Johan
(oh, yes, I know Im a new member and I will introduce myself more properly in the relevant section soon enough. Just had to get this down in writing...)
