Hi today when the mrs was driving my belt tensioners bearings collapsed resulting in the belt coming off, wrapping around the crankshaft pulley and shearing itself in half, I was in work and as such she called the RAC, when they arrived 3 1/2 hours later they informed her they had no belt, no tensioner and could not tow her as "its a 4 wheel drive and its too heavy", hurray RAC what do i pay you for?
So eventually he told me he could "pull me half a mile as that would be ok" but not the mile and a half home. (is it dodgy?)
I decided to be towed to a local mechanic and stored at his overnight until i could get the bits.
phoned paddocks, about 30 quid for a new tensioner and nine pound for the belt, great! then the guy on the phone informed me that he had made a mistake and had quoted me for the tdi, the V8 tensioner was more like 70+VAT I declined.
back at the garage i told the mechanic who had an old tdi 1 lying around and he mentioned you can buy the bearing kits off ebay for about a tenner, better still you can just pop the one out of his one and put it straight into mine! problem sorted, the belts arriving tommorow. Nice 1
A bit long winded i know but im well chuffed with my 70 quid saving and wanted to share it with you guys, maybe this thread will save someone else 70 squids. I hope so
PS gonna buy the mech his bearings back (well order me some off ebay and give him his old ones back) £3.95+£1.75 postage!
