My k plate defender 90 200tdi runs well enough for an engine with 123000.
I keep it well serviced and had the gear box replaced 12000 miles ago.
When driving in 4th and 5th in particular the engine pulls really well however when the power is feathered in at anything over 45MPH the gear box has a suspicious rattly whine?? With power off and freewheeling - the noise stops- when I apply the slightest power the noise stops? Is this a faulty recon gear box or a landy trademark?? Any advice on how to cure this ??
Please dont misunderstand i dont mind rattles and engine noise but on long journeys this idle rattle / whine gets on your nerves!!
cheers

its possible box isnt shimmed properly allowing shafts to move ,gears are helical cut so when power applied they are pushed against bearings ,when overrunning they will move to other end ,or if just in 5th could be worn 5th gear

did it start imediately after fitting box? ,no noise at tick over?try with front prop off in diff lock then rear , then let us know and we could rule out t/box then your sure its g/box, the only problem with recon is the chance someparts may look fine but on edge of usefulness ,new parts can be poor ,apart from human error but generally usually most cost effective cure to faults,

Box was fitted before I purchased vehicle so its done at least 10k before any problems.
No noise on tickover or when pulling. Its at its worst when overunning between 45 and 60.Bearings sound like the most logical diagnosis as they rattle when not working hard. Will this develop into a worse problem or just stay as is? Im really reluctant to remove G box until I really have to.Is this common with LT77 box?? Clutch was replaced prior to purchase also so I dont even have an excuse to change that either.

the other thing worth looking at is end float in intermediate gear which can be felt with t/box sump off it can be adjusted out by tightening nut on outside of box
