As a brand new landy owner, i'd like to get her off the tarmac. But I'm unsure where I can and can't drive. Can anyone suggest a book or website (or local club/owners group) that can give me some basic info on how to identify lanes, the different classifications, and where I can/can't drive.

Specifically, there are a lot of unsurfaced roads around the NW of Basingstoke, just off off the 339 near Wooton and Manydown Farm's Estate land. I've run through the areas footpaths many times, and there are a number of tracks that are signposted "byways" and are clearly regularly driven, as they have vehicle tracks. How would i best find out if they are rights of way?

Definitely worth going out with a local group as MHM suggests. Do some of your own research as well - buy a decent map and check marked byways against the Hants and Surrey County Council websites. Hants is extremely good with an interactive map that will highlight the legal byways, and more importantly, byways that are TRO-ed and illiegal to drive.

Get onto Trailwise and take a look there for current usage data.

Golden rule though is don't go out alone, especially when you've not been out before. Don't get too precious about your paintwork either :D Many of the local lanes can be quite overgrown, especially in the Summer!

ask MHM to take you to the water lane.... but book an appointment with the body shop first lol

Salisbury plains, in my opinion, is the best place around here to have some fun
