Hello Land Rover Wolrd!

Finally, I decided to change my travel way. I traveled by foot.

First, I thought about camper van - too expensive, too much work.
Second, camper - too big, for old people.
Third, last - car for expedition.

One day I said: The best option is Land Rover Discovery and things which is more important - it's my dream.

I started looking for in Poland (Yes, I'm Polish) but it's cars are in bad condition. Generally, where are the larges numer of Land Rovers? In UK.

The problem is that I live in Poland and it's really hard find a car in diffrent country. I usualy sent a message to seller but nobody answer when got know I'm not local. To be honest, normal reaction.

Dear Sirs and Ladies, you have knowledge and know everything about Land Rover Discovery so I ask you that somebody can help me to find in good condition Land Rover Dream? Please.

I'm looking for Discovery I (300 Tdi) or II (Td5) in automatic transmission and air condition (but not necessary). DI or DII will be better for expedition? For me the most important is chassis, engine and gearbox. It's hard to see because nobody made photos and engine you have to hear and see how work.

If you have a time and a littel bit willingness will be for me huge pleasure if you help me.

All the best,
Oskar.

I sent a message but I didn't get answer. Maybe somebody is from Dover?

Thank you for a good idea. I knew that I can check MOT but I didn't know that I can check history.

So was a very helpful. For example how looks it in real?

  • Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced (6.1.1 (c) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Integral body structure or chassis corroded within 30cm of a mounting, but not seriously affecting overall security In front of axle. (6.2.2 (d) (i))
  • Offside Rear Integral body structure or chassis corroded within 30cm of a mounting, but not seriously affecting overall security In front of axle. (6.2.2 (d) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Integral body structure or chassis corroded within 30cm of a mounting, but not seriously affecting overall security Behind axle. (6.2.2 (d) (i))
  • Offside Rear Integral body structure or chassis corroded within 30cm of a mounting, but not seriously affecting overall security Behind axle. (6.2.2 (d) (i))

Getting a bit rusty. Not bad enough to fail this year, but will be a problem in years to come.

If that was tested with those wheels and tyres on, I am surprised that it passed an MOT at all, as the wheels appear to stick out beyond the wheel arches.

Myself, I would avoid that one.

Welcome.
The last MoT will show you how it was on that date, and that date only. Anything can happen after it leaves the testing station. Just because it passed on that day does not mean it will be in that condition every day after. New faults may appear, old faults may reappear. Advisories may or may not be fixed.
Your best best is to trawl the sites until you find 3 or 4 that you like, which are in close distance of each other, then fly over, or drive over, and go view them. Bring someone with you, to drive the second vehicle back to Poland, or bring a trailer so you can trailer it back.
As for ebay, quite often people are, rightly, wary of buyers from abroad, asking about cars, and a lot will depend on your ebay feedback.

I don't even know if that thing is legal on our roads. The bumper ends don't look right.

Welcome:)

Have you looked in Germany there will be loads available, bit closer too.
Also being in Europe you may find it easier to register it. Back in Poland.

Good luck with the search :)

Thank all for answers. I'm looking for a car for longer. 2-3 years is not good perspective. Especially, if I wanna travel no just to mechanic.

Things which I posted from MOT report are from diffrent car. But the same problems has a car from eBay.

I'm not sad or angry if nobody answer to me becuase I understand people. I just write, sent and wait. Maybe one day I will be have a gold shot.

Wheels looks like on the car from eBay even Poland are illegal.

I checked on mobile.de and didin't look better that UK.

I will be patient and one day I going to find my Disco.

Thank you Guys for help!

Just thinking. Not Discos but there must be loads of cast Series III still knocking about and Defenders, of all breeds in Germany. We didn't bring them back with us. Look for whoever the MoD is using to sell off kit. There is usually one company does all. Perhaps the Defence Disposals can point you in the right direction. Or maybe look at cast vehicles from Poland/Germany/Belgian Forces.

I would say 99 percent of D1 still on the road in the UK are living on borrowed time, the rest will have been cut/shut/big wheels, and will end their life on a pay and play site, 80 percent of D2 wont be on the road in 5 years, the other 20 percent will be gone in 10 years at best.
I cant remember seeing a D1 on the road in Kent for quite some time, even D2 are unusual, maybe more up country?

Just had a quick look on ebay 15 x D1 and 95 x D2 for sale, pretty low numbers.

The problem with either D1 or D2 will be rust - D1 bodies rot for fun, and D2 chassis are notorious.

They are getting on now, and very very few are looked after properly, so .....

One option for us is to re-import one from Japan - but probably not much use to you, being RHD - So, .... is there a dry country which you could import a LHD one from? - I know there are vehicle import specialists in Cyprus - it might be worth getting in touch with them - IIRC they are called algys autos or somesuch ... Your chosen search engine should help you find them, and any others....

Good luck.

One thing I would say about D2s is that it is easier to get a good V8 than a good Td5.

The V8s tend to have been bought originally by people who had enough money to look after them, and now tend to have lower mileages than the diesels. V8 is a good engine, there is lots of knowledge about them around, including on this forum.
V8s usually have autoboxes, which extends the life of the engine and the rest of the transmission.

If driven carefully, they aren't actually too bad on fuel economy, and a good V8 is likely to be several thousand pounds cheaper than a good Td5, so you have a few grand to spend on petrol straight away.

Stop reminding me of the practicalities of a V8 - you'll get me in trouble :p ....... :D

There are even immaculate Jap V8 re-imports on the 'bay with ~50K miles on for 7 or 8 £K ..... oh god  get you behind me satan :D :D ...

Going for lie down now.

Have to say, I loved mine. It was far and away the best VFM Land Rover I have ever had.
I only paid 1200 quid, it ran trouble free for 3 years, except that I had to change an idler pulley in the serpentine belt, which cost about 25 quid.
And then I sold it for £750.
And it was quiet and comfortable, women liked going out in it for sightseeing trips, and it was excellent for towing, plenty of torque, and an autobox.
