To buy the bobbins is expensive unfortunately, that is why I now make my own! You would be surprised how many hundreds you need. When using fine threads - like the filament for the fish, then the very, very slim bobbins are best and there was well over a hundred used for that little picture. If I am using a coarser lined thread, then the 'firmer' ones are better. Wood is the best thing to make the from although you can get some made from glass, brass, bone and pre-1947 ivory. Plastic ones are used by beginners to cut the starter costs. I like to use a linen thread which is specially done for making lace ( an S twist as opposed to a Z twist) and that is not cheap BUT it goes a long way.:)
