I want to hear more of that V8 noise...

...so what can I do, exhaust wise? Any V8 can be made to sound good with a reasonable exhaust, so what's the best route to free up some DB's without losing any power.

Anyone still make/stock aftermarket sports exhausts at a reasonable price?

be careful what you wish for, a raunchy sounding exhaust can be a right PIA on a long trip.
My janspeed is a nice balance. sounds fruity but not intrusive on long journys

Well the 40 series is designed to quieten it down round town when you're moving at 2k-2.5k and then make some serious noise when you give it a bit of throttle

I went with it after doing some research as I was wanting an aggressive sound from my would be V8 109

I used to have a complete rimmer bros stainless system on my '90 classic when it was 3.9, which always sounded ok, but i started having trouble with it leaking. Centre box went first, so removed it (sounded great :)).

Then i ended up getting the manifolds replaced under lifetime warranty (they had been on approx 10 yrs). The quality on the new set was awfull though, I wouldn't buy another set.

Then, when the 4.6 went in, it was so loud it was horrendous. I would get old folk waving at me from the side of the road for going too fast when doing 30mph lol. I've ended up putting a new stainless centre box in from a company called custom chrome near Nuneaton, now it sounds perfect.

I think Custom Chrome might do complete systems too, worth checking them out.

Not sure about it being a 'reasonable price' but my quicksilver one sounds like a beast when you give it some beans, but is very quiet at cruising speed. Also alledgly gives an extra 17bhp, although I haven't dyno'd to compare, does feel like throttle response is better though.

Easiest way to go is remove the centre box and put in a straight through centre box replacement pipe (stainless).

An alternative is remove the back box and change the centre box for a cherry bomb centre; I know a couple of guys who went this route; sounds pretty good.

You need to be careful though because as already said it can be too loud and you wouldn't want to drive any distance; I've made that mistake myself got to the point I almost didn't want to drive it!

Thanks guys! Dr_Evil - is that a back box or centre box? How much?

Cheers Kev. Would either of those options make it "boomy" and too noisey at cruising speed do you think?

Either or really

It can be installed anywhere in the system as its part of a one pipe setup

I paid £90 for it delivered so I'd hope for somewhere near that but feel free to make me an offer, I can stick it in the post on wednesday so you'll get it before the weekend to mess with

Not really. I run mine on standard back box but no centre box and it is fine. Gives just enough noise as you give some gas, stick a snorkel on it and get some induction roar as well and you're good to go!

When I had no centre box and a small cherry bomb on the back it was too much, would give you a headache after about 20 min (mind you I am getting older!)

Cool, thanks Kev! Where did you get your centre section from, or did you just make one up out of some straight pipe?

Thinking about it, Carl has a spare brand new centre section laying around so I might nab that off him and do without the backbox, if I can figure out how to replace it with pipe! Hmm...

I got mine off a friend of a friend who bought for his V8 Disco but it didn't fit that. I don't know where it came from but it is a stainless steel centre box replacement pipe. I'm sure if you do a search you'll find one but be aware I think there are a couple of different ones. It has to do with the "Y" pipe, there is one for the manual trans, one for auto, I think one for cats and then there is a "multi-purpose" one. I think the difference is to do with the length and off set of the "Y" pipe which will affect fitting a centre box replacement pipe. I'm sure somebody who knows more about it will set you straight.

On my classic I fitted a cherrybomb centre then a pair of turbo mufflers (which are cheap and quiet) can't remember what size ones now. It was pretty quiet (with a nice rumble) when you were driving normally. But has a real nice bark when you caned it - perfect.

can't you just remove the back box and replace it with a lengh of pipe . thought the center box did all the back pressure work ?

Yes you can, that's another option. My father-in-law has done that on his softdash and it sounds nice, although still fairly quiet, but it's tricky for me to judge as mine's fairly loud.

Does mean he's kept his Cat for MOT time though of course.
