Hi guys i work as a dj and need a landrover for this winter as a backup vehicle just incase the snow is bad again last year i went to the last drop village in bolton sideways in my transit van
so here goes
i need a LWB Landrover as cheap as possible doesnt matter about a mot etc as long as it will pass one with a bit of work im ok with engines etc and i am pretty nifty with a mig welder
i wouldnt mind a old one which is tax exempt and i kinda like the off road look snorkle and stuff
Firstly, what is your budget? Secondly, do you need the rear space for disco equipment or do you DJ for clubs? If you don't have equipment to carry around, a Freelander TD4 would be suitable. If you do have equipment to carry around, the Defender 110 offers the most rear space. If the Defender 110 is too big, there's the Defender 90 and also the Discovery. The Freelander and the Discovery offer an improved ride over the Defender on normal road conditions however. Your other option is to buy any Land Rover and buy a box trailer. Though, this may not be so ideal for bad weather conditions, but it may still be a good compromise. Doing so may allow you to get rid of your van too.
Freelander TD4 (AKA "Gaylander" / "Hippo")
Pros:
- The most fuel efficient out of the bunch
- Car like handling (in relative terms)
- Good for light off-roading and extreme weather conditions
- Excellent on snow and wet grass
- Hill Descent Control
Cons:
- Reliability issues (The diesel engines are good engines however)
- Small boot (seats fold down though)
- Mediocre ground clearance
- No low range gearbox (but do you need it?)
- Lower recommended towing ability (2000kg)
- You will get mocked on here for owning one
- Can be expensive to repair
Discovery
Pros:
- Arguably the best all-rounder
- Good off-road performance
- Low range gearbox
- Spacious
- Good towing capability
- Good ground clearance
- Lives up to the Land Rover image
Cons:
- Known to rust
- Not quick (but hey, it's a Land Rover)
- Can be expensive to repair
- Doesn't have brilliant handling on-road (but again, it's a 2 tonne 4x4)
Defender 110
Defender 90
Someone else can do the pros and cons for the Defender.
Land Rover Series
I don't really know much about these, because they're not my cup of tea. I'm sure the tractor boys will arrive shortly however.
