Firstly, what is your budget? Secondly, do you need the rear space for disco equipment or do you DJ for clubs? If you don't have equipment to carry around, a Freelander TD4 would be suitable. If you do have equipment to carry around, the Defender 110 offers the most rear space. If the Defender 110 is too big, there's the Defender 90 and also the Discovery. The Freelander and the Discovery offer an improved ride over the Defender on normal road conditions however. Your other option is to buy any Land Rover and buy a box trailer. Though, this may not be so ideal for bad weather conditions, but it may still be a good compromise. Doing so may allow you to get rid of your van too.

Freelander TD4 (AKA "Gaylander" / "Hippo")

Pros:

- The most fuel efficient out of the bunch
- Car like handling (in relative terms)
- Good for light off-roading and extreme weather conditions
- Excellent on snow and wet grass
- Hill Descent Control

Cons:

- Reliability issues (The diesel engines are good engines however)
- Small boot (seats fold down though)
- Mediocre ground clearance
- No low range gearbox (but do you need it?)
- Lower recommended towing ability (2000kg)
- You will get mocked on here for owning one
- Can be expensive to repair

Discovery

Pros:

- Arguably the best all-rounder
- Good off-road performance
- Low range gearbox
- Spacious
- Good towing capability
- Good ground clearance
- Lives up to the Land Rover image

Cons:

- Known to rust
- Not quick (but hey, it's a Land Rover)
- Can be expensive to repair
- Doesn't have brilliant handling on-road (but again, it's a 2 tonne 4x4)

Someone else can do the pros and cons for the Defender.

I don't really know much about these, because they're not my cup of tea. I'm sure the tractor boys will arrive shortly however.

pros and cons for a defender

best off roader
most uncomfortable
easiest to work on
noisiest
slowest
like a giant mechano set
fabulous...

And what's wrong with a Range Rover!!

More comfort, more speed (more trouble?). reasonably good off-road performance, outstanding in snow. V8 is the way to go but they do like a drink. P38's can be troublesome. Diesels are a bit underpowered.

Range Rover Classics can be picked up for small money if you are happy to do a bit of work you can get some real bargains.
