I am losing the thread :eek: Ok, Here goes and thank you in advance for any help you can give!

I Thought it was FWH/front diff to begin with. Why? I am not sure anymore. After fine advice from Slob I removed the prop from the front diff checked that the diff flange was turnin and checked the hubs etc and all is well.

The Landy runs fine in 2 x2. When I engage 4 x4 in high ratio or shift into low ratio the drama begins. The best way to describe the problem I think is that it feels like the brakes are on. It appears to be effecting the front and back axle. it will move in 4 x4 but starts dragging wheels etc!

Being new to landys I am a little confused. Could this be the transfer box or the four wheel drive selector unit? are they one ?

Will I have to remove the whole transmission from the landy to replace the transmission box/ 4 x4 slector unit if this is the problem?

Pushing pulling locked wheels, they skid then they unlock go round and stick again. it is like a brake is on. Really hard to describe.

Funny thing is though, when I engage 4 x 4 with the FWH set to 4 x 2 there is no problem. I know I won,t be using the front axle and still only be in 2 x 2 but surley if there was a problem with the transfer box that affected the back wheels it would show it's self here. know I am starting to think it is something to do with the front axle again! I can't get me head round it...

reet wiff one wheel jacked up, g/box and t/box in 'N'
what happens if you turn the raised wheel?

then again wiff t/box in 2wd

and again wiff t/box in 4wd


then repeat all above but wiff g/box in gear


then let us know what happens

Ok, here is what I have.

rear wheel jacked up, g/box and t/box in 'N'
Wheel turns with ease, prop to t/box

t/box in 2wd prop
wheel and prop turn.

t/box in 4wd
whole prop turns with ease a little (takes up slack) then locks.

in gear the above is the same but in gear. maybe 4wd turns a little easier...
 
Cheers Slob! The front prop was still connectedwhen I tested the second time. I leave it till tomorrow then take the front prop off again and do another test like you said.

Hi Mistericeman, Thanks for that. A friend how has witnessed the problem first hand also suggested this! How would I check?

The plot thickens. This morning when going to work. with the FWH's in 4wd and running on on high ration 2wd the landy was doing the same thing! this is new. I changed the FWH's to 2wd drive to get going.

I think it might have buggered me prop :-(

I now have a vibration at around 30 mph and above. shakes all the dials etc. worse going up hills. stops when I take me foot of the pedal. I wonder if this is the prop or is it the other thing ...Bugger! Oh well, worth it though :)

I thought I might go for the mismatched diffs. I found the below while surfing. it really does sound like the problem I am having. what do you think? The conclusion was mismatched diffs but the Landy owner never got back online to say if this fixed his problem. I am guessing that it worked for him because he never replied again.

my prob is with either my g/box or my rear diff i have a ser 3 l/weight no mods on it exept i've had rr diffs fitted now ever since then when i select 4wd or low ratio my rear axle appears to lock up havent noticed it happen on the front to be honest and get alot of noise grinding etc from what sounds like underneath the veh but whats puzzling me is its ok in high ratio i was told the other day that the prob might be the ratio's are different in each axle
 
I jacked up the front and rear of the Landy, marked the tyres put it 4wd and turned them together after taking up the slack.

After one complete turn the front wheel mark was nearly one half turn behind the rear! I guess it will be a new (second hand) diffs :)

What can I say! Thanks for all your help. It has kept me sain :)
