I think my Disco is about to die... :(

Well... I think my disco is tired now and about to die..
it has 212k miles, but recently I've noticed I've lost some power..doesnt have the woompphhh anymore..

I've replaced the turbo hoses for new ones, then I found the hose from the air filter box to the turbo had colapsed internal walls, so I manged to get a new one of those...
checked the turbo for play and seems fine, the wastegate moves with no problems, the vaccumm pipe from the injection pump to the turbo has no holes...
I've clean the fuel sedimenter, which wasnt dirty anyway...

but I've ran out of ideas, dont know what else to check...

and yesterday when towing a mates disco to my house, my poor disco really struggled...
in some uphill bits I even had to put it in lows and go up in first very slowly...

I dont know what's wrong, could it be that the whine I have from the transfer box could be causing it to slow down??
I still have to do a oil change on the transfer box, but can't undo the oil filler plug!! damn fecking thing!!!
If it's completly knackered..are they expensive to get hold of? and how easy is it to replace a transfer box?
 
havent changed the fuel filter yet..going to do that one this week...
would that make a big difference? fuel filter was changed in Jan 09....and since then I've done about 1000 miles..probably not even that.
 
Check pipe from turbo to fuel pump isn,t full of oil. Take cover of fuel pump and clean out any oil and check diaphragm is not stuck .dont rotate its position though ! You might look at the fuel pipes under access panel in boot floor they often rust and cause problems.
 
pipe from turbo to fuel pump isn,t full of oil - that would be the vaccum pipe, its all good, checked it already, blown down it as well to check for holes, no problem.

No rust either on the fuel sender unit or lines going from it.

Will check the injection pump diaphragm..

OOooo, forgot to mention, yesterday also added some injector cleaner to a tank of diesel in the hope that would make a difference..
 
Have you checked the fuel lift pump? If it is playing up then you will struggle underload as it can't deliver all the fuel you are asking for.
 
nop, havent checked the lift pump... what kind of test can I do to it?

I'm also thinking of taking the radiator and intercooler out and give it all a good clean..but haven't looked at the procedure for that yet.. do I need to take the fan out?
 
I have a disco 300tdi on a 96. 201k on the clock. I had a similar issue,so i did the egr blank job, that made a difference, then i took the intercooler off (very easy to do), cleaned it out with petrol, loads of crap came out. Made a huge difference and it goes really well again.

the 200tdi (mine) doesnt have EGR, so can't do that bit..
but the rad and intercooler were on my list of next things to do... so thanks for at least confirming it made a difference, it will make me do the job sooner!
 
well... today I took the IC out and gave it a clean, was pretty dirty, took 5 flushs with petrol to clean the inside...
speaking with my mech he also told me to check the lift pump, as Richard said above...
he told me to disconect one of the pipes and crank it over and see if it spirts, if it does, the pump is fine, but if it just comes out slowly, then its fooked...

but i forgot to ask which pipe do i disconnect.. does anyone know?

The one between the pump and the fuel filter.
The pump has a lever on the bottom of it, as long as the engine has stopped in the right position, you can use it to check the pump is working..if its in the right position you will feel resitance when you operate it, if not, turn the engine over and try again.
 
update on this...

fitted the cleaned IC and a new fuel filter today, also tested the lift pump and there was diesel all over the place..

took te Hulk for a spin...seems like its back to normal...now if I accelarate it actually moves and goes over 3k revs...
going uphill is better too, but dont think as good as it used to be as I still can't get up one hill in 3rd like I used to, its a long steep hill though.
My mate with a standard disco has to do it in 2nd, but Im sure i used to do it in 3rd and to lift off so I would crash into him..

anyway..its better nevertheless...
next one is getting the straight through pipe and get the money to get the transfer box...

That is NOT a vacuum pipe!

It is a PRESSURE pipe, that feeds or turbo boost pressure to the injection pump to let the Inj pump know the turbo is blowing and by how much. The Inj pump should then fling in more diesel to match the extra air.

USUALLY the pressure pipe is attached right at the turbo for convenience. In fact it is better to attach it to the inlet manifold. That way any pressure losses (and there MUST be some) in the hoses and intercooler will be cancelled out. This usually gives a little more power.
