Can anybody help, i had my three devil break lghts come onto my dash briefly when braking, abs light , tc light, and ! light . Obviously i did nothing about it , and then all three stayed on and my brakes went to the consistancy of a wet sponge .. I spoke briefly to a guy at a range rover dealership who informed me was the abs pump ( new fitted £1000.00 !!!) so i did w any sane person would and bought a second hand one off e bay for £160.00 with the promise it was tested , worked , and would fit my 4.6 p reg range rover . Had it fitted today by a garage and still have no brakes andl ights are all still on , the relay looks as it should , well not damaged or showing any signs of burning or wear . Any other suggestions to my problem ???

i would hope that the accumulater , on top of the new second hand pump is ok , any way i can find out if it is not ? They were both attached when delivered

RAVE describes how to check accumulator, but seems you need secial tools. . . . including a gauge up to 170bar. That`s nearly 2,500 lb/sq". Not a home workshop job by the sound of it. Was the garage doing the work for you familiar with P38s? It`s not a straight-forward car (as we all know) and, although I`ve not it myself, even bleeding should be done strictly by the book. And I would guess all stored faults should be cleared from the ecus ? When the original diagnosis was made was this done on the dealer`s computor or was it a mechanic `having an educated guess`? Sorry I got no good answers but just more questions. . .

guy from range rover dealer, made an educated guess in the carpark etc , after searching numerous sites and reading others problems with the same symptoms i pretty much considered it was the pump as it was making buzzing sound and topping up, but now is silent , i had the new pump fitted by a general mechanic in a garage and not overly sure if he knows much about p38,s in general but hopefully did all he needed to do to get it working if it was going to by just changing the pump . I guess a new relay is in order on monday morning , and alot of crossed fingers and toes !!! I can imagine there is a list of other reasons for the lack of brakes and my dash lit up like a christmas tree , and i am hoping to get to grips wit what it is before it gets to any where near a £1000.00 bill . I think Range rover want £50 to put it on there diagnostic machine, numerous people have tried thier machines and none seem to want to co operate .

You say still no brakes and lights still on? Meaning no difference whatsoever? Three options: The lot from Ebay is no good or it wasn't fitted right or this was never the problem. In the third case it would then point to the modulator. Something about plastic bits inside breaking up after a while. A new modulator is around 4 grand but there's a fix developed by a guy in Aus, now sold by Rover Renovations for about 100 plus a lotta fiddling. Have a look here: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/twang-81763.html

p.s. there's really no sense in getting a second hand accumulator IMHO. They're only around 90 quid for a genuine one. I'd replace it anyway if its around 10 years old.

As i guessed there seems to be numerous reasons why i have this light, brake problem . I will see if i can get it to a dealer and get them to put it on there diagnostic machine and hopefully it will give me a deffinate outcome as to the reason of the fault . As i am only £200.00 into the problem right now i bettergive up with the easy route and give it to a man that can etc , cheers for the help

I suspect that even if you've fixed the fault, it will have to go onto a LR compatible computer to clear the faults from the ECU, before you'll know one way or the other.
