I have a TD5 2001 auto, 97k miles. I was thinking the otherday of changing her for either another (newer) Td5 or dare I say a VM Taurgage thingy or a Volvo xc90, I love the LR but i dont go off roading, i do tow a caravan though, 7 seats are useful but not needed all the time.

My problem is do i have it remapped £250 or (£500 at alive) and live with her the way she is, dropping oil, tempramental thing she is?

The auto box seems to hesitate if i have free wheeled up to roundabouts, it makes plenty of roar when i want it to go but it seems not to pull as much as the noise would indicate, auto box oil changed last year?

She is fully serviced to a point, all oils and filters done every 6 months or so, new H/gasket two yrs ago, air springs replaced last year,

What will go next or what should I check ?

and yes the sunroofs do leak !!

Im at a cross road, do i change her or keep her?

may be I just needed to tell everyone, God i love this forum.

Go easy on me

If you don't go off raod but still want a good 4x4, why not get the best in the world, a Range Rover!! If you are looking at touregs and XC90s, you might want to look at the late tdv6 Rangie, A guy i work with has had one of these for a couple of years now and says it has never let him down and the economy isn't too bad either. You can have the tdv6 remapped also giving it better power and economy. Don't bother with those poxy pretenders, for similar money you could have the king of 4x4s!

Thanks, a good suggestion !!
I just feel mines gone past its best, i thought about asking if anyone was close to the midlands that has a Disco TD5 auto so we could both drive each others and compare notes, i just feel mine is lacking now in power and driving pleasure, hence the remap. i will check auto trader on RR front.

I have an xc70 (D5 Geartronic) and a Disco TD5 (manual). Both 5 cylinder diesels...

On a long motorway journey, no comparison, the Volvo D5 is soooo smooth & refined and very quiet. The finish is as good as Audi or BMW (in fact as good as any of the 17 cars I have owned of which at least 10 have been new). Volvo ownership is very pleasant. MPG is also a good bit different - 33mpg from the TD5 and 42 mpg from the D5.

The TD5 I love...with all it's shortcomings. It tows magnificently, handles the snow better, and also a bit of minor offroading... Owned from new, it's like a family member now after it's 8 years and 163000 miles. It too was getting long in the tooth. SWMBO refuses to do long journeys in the TD5, which is why we bought the Volvo...but we were offered so little to trade-in the Landy I decided to keep it for trailer, winter and offroad duties.

The XC70 handled the winter very well, so long as the snow was 6 inches or less. But as the Scottish snow deepened, only the Disco moved off our Aviemore street for the first 3 days! Indeed I even towed a few neighbour's cars who had gotten stuck.

The Volvo D5 motor is good, and the geartronic is a good gearbox. Finish can't be faulted. The XC's 70 and 90 share so many components...

Nice one MartinK, a comparison of both my desired choices, many thanks for the informed points.

Its odd aint it they all cause us costs and oil patches but we all seem to find it hard to part with um!!

I,ve had my 2002 manual for 2 years. I got it at 60k and its done 80k now.

In those 2 years I,ve done,

clutch slave cylinder,
tank mounted fuel pump,
fuel pressure regulator,
front and rear shocks,
rear fuel lines.

The clutch master has a slight weep as does the steering box, ( both of which will be replaced ), and tonight the starter has started to " click ". ( new contacts needed ).
I,m sure it will only be a matter of time till one of my rear air bags goes aswell !.

Some poeple may look at this list and think, " Land Rover money pit " or, " time to get rid when it starts costing money ".

I, however,( as I,m sure most of the readers and contributers on this forum do), feel that
every time I replace a failing or broken part, I,m making my truck " better ".

All the things I,ve listed above,s failures are well documented, and are to be expected when these vehicles reach these ages and milages. I,ve been expecting all of them.

Fortunatly, I,m ok with the spanners, keeping my costs down. And I do get a great deal of satisfaction from completing a repair !.

This, and other forums have been an invaluable asset when looking for information and advise, with some very knowledgable folk on board.

I think my Disco is great, and untill it starts costing me " thousands " I,ve got no plans to get rid of it EVER.

Personally I think your truck is no where near its " sell by date " considering its age and milage, but even if you want to get shot of it, it,ll still be worth a bit.

Just my thoughts.

When I feel the acceleration in my TD5 is holding back a bit, I give the element on the MAF sensor and the sensor on the air box lid a clean with contact cleaner. This really improves the car and makes it rev out much better.

This mileage thingy is a bit worrying,I had a Nissan Terrano which did 137,000 with hardly anything needing to be done yet a disco seems to clap out at around 85 to 100,00.
I love my disco but at 65,000 maybe I should consider a change in the next year or so,I have no intention of getting down under and fixing it myself,I gave that up years ago.

I'll second that!
Got mine (52 plate with 32k & still under warranty) 8yrs ago.
Only problems so far, touch wood :
Power steering pump - replaced under warrrenty ( they asked me if I didn't notice the oil leak on the drive - I said I used to have a 200tdi) main ste
Tank fuel pump ( happened in Cork on holiday, main stealers were great, diagnosed problem & back on he road on 3 hrs)
Airbags - 2 yrs ago - soooo simple
Got a noisy clutch release bearing @ the moment, but the lady who had the truck B4 was horsey, so the clutch ia about f***ed, will chage both whrn it don't drive no more.

Speak to the remap firms themselves and see which ones YOU like the sound of.

I spoke to several and have made up my mind to go with Dynachip/Mike at £225 total.
