Hi all ... quick one for you if anyone can help. Recently fitted a 2" lift kit after having my rear 1/4 chassis replaced on my 200tdi Defender. Since then I am getting this deep groaning/knocking sound from the rear end as I'm slowing down towards junctions. Seems to be worse when clutch is being released slowly. My mate has had it on his ramps and said that I need a new rear diff as it has about an inch of play in it. I thought that was acceptable in the rear diff but maybe not. Anybody know anything?
Thanks all for looking.

I'd go with diff too! it shouldn't take too long, my mate blew his front one up a while back and it took us less than a day to change with the axle on the vehicle.
IIRC, it's a case of, drain fluid, undo drive flanges, pull halfshafts out a tad so they aren't in contact with diff, take propshaft off, then take out all the bolts round the the diff nose and just pull it out.
Reverse is the opposite. Might be worth sticking new seals behind the output flange whilst your at it. And change your oil after the first 500 miles, just i case theres any crap/swarf thats come off the new one. :D
Pretty sure thats how we did it but it was a while ago, if i've missed a bit out i'm sure somebody will correct me :D

Hope it goes well, Harry

Thanks G-man, a new diff it will be then. How long to fit a diff do you think and how difficult? May as well do the A Frame ball joint at the same time as they're cheap! Thanks again :)

If you need a replacement 10 Spline Rear Diff I have a spare you can take off my hands - it's located at Leamington Spa....

It came off a 200tdi 90Def axle a couple of Months ago...

Sounds good mate, I'm in Alcester so not far to come and pick up. How much are you asking for it?

Many thanks,

Andy.

ps ... thanks for the fitting instructions Harry :)
