Hi Just bought a discovery and got a major prob, hopin someone can help. For some reason it just cuts out while driving along and I come to a stop. Realy dodgy while on a busy motorway, sometimes it starts straight away and other times it takes a few minutes, dashboard lights are on but doesn't always turn over, any ideas ?

Would if I could, and if I had endless time to get around, but what I want is suggestions how to fix the problem not live in fear!

Ah, 300tdi, now we know what model disco. And my immediate thought is alarm/immobiliser spider fault. It can be by-passed, have a search.
 
Do you have a two button key fob ??

What it means is you probably have "smart spider" immobilisation,a little black box on top the heater box,behind the radio.This unit suffers from dry/melted joints giving cutting out/non start issues.Best thing to do is replace it with AMR4956 which is a link lead replacement.You are supposed to remove the heater controls/radio etc to do it,I your good you can just take the radio and its cage out.
 
From the information you've given it could be any of the following...

Fuel supply to IP
Fuel system from IP to injectors
Stop solenoid
Dodgy wiring
Spider (as mentioned)
knocking the key off with your knee
The wind direction shifting - only a 15* shift can cause all sorts of problems

Are you remembering to void your bowel before starting the engine?

dont worry to much about voiding bowel before starting engine,this will happen automaticaly when engine cuts out at 60 mph in lane two with a forty ton truck sat on your rear bumper
 
Before getting in too deep or stripping apart the entire dashboard, here is what the problem was on my 1996 Disco 1, albeit a V8.

There are two cables coming from the Positive on the battery. One is the main cable down to the starter. The other is a smaller cable, that goes the the main engine bay fusebox.

On mine, the smaller cable had broken up internally. Sometimes it would be fine, others it would break or go high resistance, and the dashboard would either light dimly, or not at all.

I replaced the spider, had the alarm box open and all sorts, only to finally find the break almost by accident. I replaced this cable, and never had another (electrical) problem in 3 years of ownership.

Worth a look first.
