2.5 TD and no problem, ill probs pop back over to it tonight and take a look, I'm almost positive my problem is the cables that i have pulled off under the bonnet at the loom...

well, if you get 12v at the spade(no 4) then check the connection terminal on the red/white wire to make sure it is ok. Then follow it along, checking for any splits and see where it goes and if anything's been tapped into it.

if you don't get 12v at the spade (no4) then check the thick brown wires(no2) have 12v.

I'd suspect the connection blocks engine bay side. Maybe you managed to plug one in wrong. try to match the known wires up (ie red/white from ignition to red/white to the starter) or they are corroded.

The engine blocks that I plugged in will be wrong somewhere, the actual loom was in 1 block with around 8 connections?.. the small yellow/brown wire has been tapped into by some1 in the past, not sure what this is for but it seems connected to nothing...

I will test the spade at no.4 when attempting to turn the ignition to on..

The loom is correct as all the cables match up, is it the other cables that i can't figure out, some have female connectors the others male, but hardly any have the same colour connecting them..

Ill let you know how i get on with it.

thin brown/yellow sounds like your alternators warning light. connect it to d+ on your alternator. the other end goes to your dash battery warning bulb

tried unplugging the loom and plugging it back in, got nothing on the small spade connector at all so i bet thats where my problem is. ill get the dash out and find that lead like you suggested trax.

ere you lazy, try it and report back ;)

Lol I've been welding up my Disco that failed the mot last week and changing the disks pads ect... Had enough of landys this week haha!

Today I've been to my mates 90, his is a 1988 mine is 1989.. Ive took so many pictures of his looms ect, went to my 90 this evening armed with a torch and corrected quite a few but i didn't have the key to try it.. Im gonna check a few more cables tomorrow and i have the key in my work jacket so ill report back tomorrow and let you know!!

ok trax heres my update, nipped to my mates defender this morning to check the wiring again after i tried mine on the key and it didn't work, checked a few more wires and finally found the black with a white stripe, there are 2 that go into 1 block and then connected to that there are the same black with a white stripe but they are thinner and separate... plugged them in and it started first time on the key.... I could have cried........... well maybe i did a little.. haha!

Tried to drive it and i had nothing when i lifted the clutch, whoops i forgot to bleed the clutch lol...

the black/white isn't on the new engine. i used the old loom on the new engine, i undid a few that i shouldn't have thats what pooped me up... it comes from the bulkhead and heads down the drivers side.... somewhere lol
