I HATE electrics...(won't turn on)

I can short it and get the starter to spin in the casing mate, I've just noticed your post about the fuel filter, it was bolted onto the bulk head but i took it off to get to the wiring then took the pic, just before throwing a paddy and packing up lol...

Sp00k mate its not a fuel issue, Its not turning over at all, its literally a click when i turn the ignition lights on and when i go to the 3rd position which would usually start it up another click.. thats it... nothing else... at all....

If i short the terminals on the starter i can get it to spin.. obviously the small wire would make the plunger or whatever u wanna call it pop out, that has 5V on it, should be 12 i thought, i may get a wire straight from the + on the battery to the small wire itself to see if its a volt issue on that cable... or would 5v do it?..

Does anybody have a good wiring diagram of all the electrics on a defender 1989?

I need to know what cables are coming out of the bulkhead and what colour they should connect to.. cheers

I mean short between the starter + and the small solenoid terminal - the one that the small wire would connect to. This should close the solenoid and throw out the starter cog.

If that works there is a problem with the rest of your wiring. Haynes has diagrams in it.

Ok so I heard the plunger come out but nothing from the starter...

Where abouts in Derbyshire are you? (vaguely, north south east west type thing or nearest town)

the 5v coming out of the wire is an issue, obivously something else isn't quite right with the ignition circuit.

Im at J28 of the M1, South Normanton, well thats where the truck is. I live at stone broom, about 10 mins away.

Tomorrow i will go and swap the starter motors, when the the starter is off i will see if i can get it to work while its off to see if it was the old starter... if it isn't then I'm trumped..

just remember, 12v to the post where the starter motor cable connects to will spin the starter.

12v to the spade will shoot the cog out and connect the two posts together.

so if you have the batt connected to the large solenoid post, starter connected to the other large post and stick 12v to the lil spade. The solenoid moves, kicking the cog out and bridging the two posts, which gives power to the starter.

if that doesn't happen for some of it, then it's a bit borked :)

Indeed, wish i had just left the 200tdi starter in now, not actually sure why i swapped that but my god its a lot easier when the engine is out lol....

I have a bet on with my friends that the white stuff won't drop until I'm ready to play.. they are cursing me wanting snow to come!!

Im just a bit concerned that i only get 5v from the little thin wire when the ignition is switched to on...

that's the next job, get a working starter first ;)

If you're still struggling by Tuesday drop me a PM - i'll be up in Derby on Tuesday and happy to pop over and give you a hand, i'm no vehicle electrics expert, but i'm not bad with it all - understand how it all works, etc.

thanks buddy, sadly I'm at work until 7 on tuesday but if u happen to be about and it isn't working that would be awesome for a hand!

Ok I swapped the starter.. I can get it to fire up with a screw driver on the + and little spade conn... But not on the key...

excellent.

what was in before a 2.5na?

go take the plastic off your steering column and look at the back of the ignition switch.

you should see the white/red wire going into it.

go pull it off and stick a multi on the spade it was connected to.

see what voltage it's getting when you turn it over.

2.5 TD and no problem, ill probs pop back over to it tonight and take a look, I'm almost positive my problem is the cables that i have pulled off under the bonnet at the loom...
