Is the rack easy to get to? Or is it a pig of a job?

It's not a difficult job, once you can unbolt the arm from the rack. There's not much room if it's a TD4, but it is doable. You'll need a Torx socket of the correct size (I've forgotten) Make sure you set the new arm to the exact same length as the one you remove and it's wise to grease the threads on the arm adjuster too, as they're difficult to free off when they seize.

Oh another question. Can I tow another car, small, fiesta/Corsa, no bigger than focus sized with either a car trailer or an a frame with the freelander? I know it depends on what I have on my licence and I’m in the middle of finding that out but I’m confused by plated weights and maximum authorised mass and gross mass and the likes
 
The Freelander is ok to tow 2000 Kgs. So providing the trailer and car on it come under 2000 Kgs, it'll be fine. If you took your test after 1997, you'll not be able to tow a trailer of greater than 750 Kgs, without taking another test.

see this is where im confused, i passed my test in 2008, according to the gobblygook on the gov website i can tow anything providing the car and the trailer doesnt go over 3500kgs. iv looked around and the maximum authorised mass of the freelander is 2080kgs theoretically i can tow a trailer plated up to 1420 kgs. thats how i read it anyways. thats why im confused

I'm not sure which figures the authorities would go on, if you were unlucky enough to be pulled over.
If they assume the vehicle is at its MAM and the trailer weighs the vehicles towing limit, then you'll exceed the weight you're allowed by your licence.

Also some FL1s were rated to tow just 1800Kgs, but I can't remember which now.

That is correct, but being able to tow 1420kg isn’t a great deal of use, once you take the unladen weight of the trailer into account.

A few years ago I just bit the bullet and did a quick trailer course. It’s quite expensive (£400) and very silly - you basically follow the format of the artic test. It’s like taking your driving test again, in order to be able to do what most people can do automatically. A moneymaker for the test centres.

However, the lads at the Exeter test centre were really good, and well-versed in whipping experienced drivers back into shape.

Just go with what they tell you, and don’t bother arguing or thinking.

1. My Defender’s mirrors fold outwards into towing configuration - why are you duct-taping caravan mirrors on?
2. Why do I have to wear this smelly hi-vis jacket?
3. Why do I need to switch off the engine each time I get out to check the hitch position?
4. Oh, I have to steer like THAT again, do I?

well that was a learning curve.. couldnt for the life of me get the arm bolts off. os ended up just changing the threaded part and the tie rod end from the new set to the old arm.

as for the mount... well. it came... wrong flipping one. have to wait till tomorrow now :/
 
so im wanting to do something about the radio. i cant use the turny knob as its tempremental and decides to increase the volume rapidly upon cornering.... troublesome especially as the mrs taste in music seems to be abba....

anywho im toying with replacing with a tablet, i know ill loose the steering controlls but im not that bothered.
my main problem seems to be finding a tablet with an fm reciever.
dont want to be draining my data listing to radio 1 all day.

does anyone have any ideas? in the process ill be upgrading the speakers and fitting a small amp to power said speakers (youtube can teach you anything these days)

also how do i get the radio out? im ised to having to buy radio pins and cages and the like

You won't. As far as I know, no current tablet is made with an FM receiver.
Why not just get one of those cheap Android double din HUs that are available very cheaply these days.

apparently the lenovo tab 1 and tab 2 have an fm reciever. there quite cheap 2nd hand so might look into that. its only going to run the radio, spotify and probably waze for sat nav unless i can grab an os map app to show the byways for greenlaning
 
I have my first problem :( my rear window will go down but not up :( checked the wiring behind the panel and it looks as tho someone has bodged it to stay up... or changed the motor plug :(


Also where the switch is for the rear window, there’s another connector behind one of the blanks anyone know what that’s for?
 
We'll need a pic of the switches to know which one the blank is. Theres a list int owners manwell.

If it's the boot window your talking about they're a right B@$tard. Usual culprits are the switch in the door lock mechanism or the switch in the handle. Did the window drop when opening the boot and go back up when closing it?
