I’m new to landyzone although I have been on the defender forums a while !! Td5 knock??

I had a look on the waveform from Deftd506 video. It looks like my waveform in post #18. So it's every 5th "combustion". So we have this sound ~6 times per second. Do mean this?

If the noise at idle is occurring at a frequency that pretty much equates to idle rpm then that would suggest it is crankshaft related not camshaft.
So again, this sounds as though it could be a big end bearing.

My reasoning- The noise is about 6 times a second or 360 taps per minute so if cam rotates half of crank speed at assumed idle of 720rpm then that points to cam ?

Then your logic is good. I was just too lazy to multiply 6 by 60 myself and took your word that "6 times a second equates to 720rpm" It does indeed equate to 360 taps per minute which gives you a camshaft with an engine at about idle.

There seems to me to be an additional tapping noise associated with injector 2. There is a slight noise with 3 as well, but 2 definitely sounds different.

With disconnected injector 2 and 5 knocking is loudest but it's also there on 3 and 4 quieter or not so often - hard to say because of unsteady rev. But when Injector 1 is disconnected i cannot hear a knocking, so Injector 1 is the suspicious....currently I'm searching another method to detect the cylinder with knocking....

Fun fact: The Td5 starts with 4 cylinders as well as with 5 cylinders immediately

Mario

Fair play, you are determined!

I’ve lost interest with mine.. however I must motivate myself to get it sorted.

Driving a 110 Td5 today, silky smooth and twice the mileage!

Out of interest how many miles has your Td5 covered ?

My TD5 has 178.000km.

Don't give up! There must be a solution. I think if you get another one, you are not "immune" of the issue and when it comes back with your "new" one you are in the same sitation. On the other hand, what will you tell if you are sell your current TD5? It's driving, starting, no smoke, some people doesn't recognize by this sound...

I've started another attempt with a mechanical stethoscope. Knocking is not much louder with the stethoscope but cylinder 1 or 2 is very harsh, so I'm sure knocking comes from cylinder 1. There is no conspicuous mechanical sound, so I think this is a indication that there is no mechanical issue.

From other TD5 drivers in germany I've heard that they had up to 3-4 tries to get good working injectors from Land Rover...currently I'm in contact with my spare part dealer...

Looks like we are not the only Td5 owners with the “knock”! A chap from the defender forum I’m on has posted a video with the same problem.. video as well. Check it out on the Td5 posts.

I know it sounds ridiculously simple/obvious but I used to change the oil in mine every 6k, I noticed it was getting a bit of knocking /tappet noise towards the end of those miles, I've since dropped the oil out at 5k each time and have no knocking or any untoward sounds, the tappets are hydraulic aren't they so very reliant on good oil

The most conspicuous aspect is tha the knocking stops while engine is revving down or pushing operation (is this the right wording?) and no injection is done...so i assume it's not an mechanical/oil issue....put in 1st gear, roll downwards no knocking, in the flat when injection is made to drive forward knocking comes back.

Hi!
Find you the source of this knocking? Now I have same issue on my TD5 D2...

No solution found so far....after driving some long distances on highway, I have the feeling that knocking becomes quiter... but it's kind of unsatisfying...

Do you have something changed on our engine? Could you please give some details about your engine?

Changed many parts, few weeks ago - damper-crankshaft, waterpump, alternator, starter, but knocking was before all that. 378000km, but engine perfect working and starting.
In my case - knocking not have same period(rhythm).
Now i'm thinking - remove cam cover, cut off part from second cam cover(for secure timing chain) and watching and hearing, what happens there
