What you'll need is a winch tray and some sheet metal to make up into sides

One winch tray

Fold up some 90* angle the same depth as the tray and height of the sides out of 1/4" steel, mark out the holes on the winch tray onto the plate so it sits right, centre punch, stick in the radial drill and once done begin weld prep.
Grind off mill scale and paint, bolt onto the tray and make sure its tight so everything is flush before tacking and seam welding up

Use more 1/4" steel plate to make up some sides

Also got some recovery points for it that will be put through the 17mm deep cuts in the sides, the recovery points are 15mm by 50mm with a 20mm hole in the front for a large shackle

Just to add, the sides are angled back at 10* and tapered down from 6" to 2"

They will then be set dead level instead of downwards at 5* like most tapered bumpers

i.e. unlike

The sides will not point downwards but instead more like this

na just wonderer ..steel is easy to work compared,:D

you should make some HD steering arms and damper brackets while yer at school..

alsomake some rear bolt on points for the dampers ...them buggers allways break,:D

I'm getting a TIG to practice with (mainly as one of the techs is teaching me to stick properly) means I can practice my steel DC TIG and some AC alloy TIG work too :) and it also has the stick side which should be a lot nicer on 1/4" upwards steel, the MIG needs to be turned up full chat to do this thickness.

Bolt on points for the dampers ? You mean as in the mounts on the axle ? Steering arms are easy enough I reckon, just turn it off on the lathe and finish off in the mill :p may make a couple for me series and disco when I get the time! Doing my series rock/tree sliders tomorrow so will get some pics of them too ;) beastly is an understatement!

i busted 1,rekon the spring was tired or i hit the top field too hard....

was not expensive but if it does break then mak summat stronger.
of course this would be no use on a td5 as the chassis is made of tuna can...:D

Just won a husky winch so going to do a trial fit today if I get the chance :p

And yeah suppose if its breaking it could use one ;) Cant really see it working as a bolt on piece though, maybe just a weld on piece that sits over the top and welds to the chassis to act as a double skin would be better

Alloy is much easier to work as it shrinks easy, but better to weld as it heat distorts and shrinks less during welding

Nah ;) Toyota box is actually keeping hold of my defender gearstick and selector housing :p it fitted round it when I collected it so we went with that box.

Not too hard to fit to a disco 3 as they've got dedicated mounts on the front from the pics I've seen :) beasts of a winch though!

Just need some synthetic rope for it now
