So i thought i would be smart and bought myself a whole d1 front axle so i could rebuild the hub swivel ball units and just swap them onto my d1.I now find there are 2 variants in design so is my plan a no go will the older variant not go onto a newer axel?

I might be wrong here, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I am. IIRC there are two types of swivel arrangements fitted to the D1 one is for ABS models and the other for none ABS. They are I believe interchangeable, one has a hole in the upper pin for the ABS sensor. D2 axles and swivels are different again the swivels being somewhat smaller.

theres 2 types abs and non abs ,abs uses frc7065 (ftc5366)std disco rrc ball non abs and abs uses pre 300 tdi defender ball frc2644(ftc5105)

Thanks for everyones prompt replies.its not just the balls i had planned to swap its the whole unit housing drive shafts etc only on the earlier unit the drive flange is different to the later one so i was wondering if any other differences will scupper my plans to recon the unit and then just bolt it onto the main axle casing.

cases are the same so whole wheel stations can be swapped as long as splines fit diff ie 10 spline shafts for 10 spline diffs
