Hub locknut size?

Hi

Trying to get at the hub assembly to replace broken wheel bearing but stopped by the hub locknut. What size is it and is there a spanner for it?

If you're stuck you can usually tap them round with a chisel like object such as a screwdriver. Shouldn't be tight once the locknut is moved a bit. Think the nuts are 52mm.

Get yourself a box spanner just for this job, it will have a hole in the top end that a tommy bar fits through.[avalable from most landy parts suppliers for about a tener]

Ok got the locknuts off but the hub itself won't budge. Haynes book says it should slide off... No. Any ideas?

If ye've got disc brakes then remove the brake caliper

and aye it's 52mm fur the hub nuts

The proper tool really isn't expensive. 52mm box spanner is available from all the usual places.

Caliper is already off...

Have tried persuading it, but no joy. Have lubed it up right nice and will try again tomorrow...

If it doesn't just pull off. Either you haven't taken the 2nd nut off??? or the wheel bearing have seized onto the shaft. in which case BIG hammer will be required.

Yep, all locknuts and spacers off. Bearing is shagged which is why I'm switching - have a feeling it got warm and welded itself on. Tried heating it up and beating it... may have been a bit pansy about it because even with a piece of wood on the disc I was a bit scared of mullering it.

noo disc is less than £20. Belt the Fooker. or try a big pry bar behind the hub. If all else fails get a good quallity cold chisel and split the bearing race.

The stub axle is probably now scrap if the bearing has broken up, in which case a Dremel grinder on the inside, should be able to grind away a groove down the length of it, thus allowing it to bend to a smaller size when you hammer off the hub.

Have you tried a normal hammer or a slide hammer?

when
you have only the center of the bearing left on the stub axle,grind some of the way through then split with a good whack of the cold chisel,it will split and be easy to remove. Check stubaxle carfully for damage espcialy where the oil seal runs,before fitting in hub try new bearings on stubaxle they should slide on and off by hand if not renew.Good thing with landys you can do this most vehicles need a whole new axle.Good luck.
