One of my rear hub caps (the little plastic things) seems to have started leaking. I found that the wheel was covered in oil after a 4WD trip yesterday, and when I checked the cap it seemed to be looser than all the others. I am a bit annoyed as I only replaced that particular cap last year, so it hasn't lasted well at all. Anyone else had problems with low-quality ones before?

In any case, I suppose I'll have to order another one now, but I would like to stuff it full of grease if I can this time to help it seal better. Is it okay to use grease inside the cap on a 1986 model, and can anyone tell me what type of grease to use?

Thank you.

is it thin watery oil that smells like ****?? if so your rear hub oil seal is leaking and EP oil is escaping from the axle diff. If it's thicker and a bit gooey then you have contaminated the grease in the wheel bearings, with water and you need to clean em out and redo them.

The caps are crap regardless of which make you get..

if you do decide to fill em with grease same grease as you use for the wheel bearings would make most sense.
try using Marine grease when you redo the wheel bearings.

There was a tiny bit of oil sitting in the cap when I removed it to have a look. I seem to recall that it was a slightly milky colour. Is this a sign of water contamination?

I couldn't tell if it was contaminated grease or EP90. Hopefully the inner axle seal is not leaking as that would be a pain.

Use a jubilee clip and tighten it around the cap ! Release the clip and cap should now be a better fit ! If not do it again a bit tighter on jubilee clip!!! Also check your axle breather is not blocked ! Presure build up forces oil past seals!!!

Some oil in the cap isnt a prob, I stripped my hub and found oil in the bearings as hub seals were worn ( mines an 86 110 ex mod).
There isnt an inner oil seal on the shaft/ axle, at least not on the rear shafts so oil can creep along the splines a bit, but if its excessive it could be blocked breater as mentioned earlier, on mine it was blocked solid.

I had this on my 90 and it was because the groove on the actual hub was getting dodgy and corroded. I ended up changing the flange and that solved the problem.
