wooooooops I made a big mistake I think when I said left handed thread I must not have been thinking right .I have a big 3/4 inch bar extendable and this did the trick but you must have the wheel on the ground with the full weight of the car on it and if you have some one in the drivers seat holding the brake pedal down but if not and as you said no breaks then seriously chock all wheels they are a pig to get off .

No problem.

I haven't got around to trying yet. Will probably be a job for after Xmas now. Think I will try the drilling method though.

Thanks all

Really? 5 pages of replies on how to unscrew one nut?

Only drill or chisel things off as a very last resort - this is the sort of thing you try when all else has failed because it takes time and it runs the risk of damaging the threads on the end of the driveshaft.

Wheel on, weight of the car on the ground, chock the wheel with a LARGE bit of wood or a breeze block or similar. As you use the breaker bar, push the chock into the tyre with your foot so it doesnt slip. If you need to, slip a metal tube over the handle of the breaker bar to extend your leverage. A bit of scaffolding pole is ideal, but any tube will do, even a length of exhaust pipe.

Alternatively, if you cant get the weight of the car on its wheels, get a bit of metal maybe 3 or 4 feet long. Sturdy angle iron or similar and drill two holes in it and bolt it to the hub using the wheel nuts. The other end of the bar rests against the ground and prevents the hub turning as you undo the nut.

And it is NOT a left handed thread. It unscrews in the normal anti-clockwise direction.
