sorry about the title ment to who. Hi just finished a chassis change on a 96 defender and put a disco trany box in that i had spare, got some 265/75/16 insa dakars and its out for the first drive today.not sure im happy, it all seems a bit to high geared or am i just not use to it.may be shouls have got 265/70.has anyone got this set up on a defender or i suppose a disco.ps the tires rub on full lock,:(

It sound like a big change may just take dime getting used too.

You can adjust the lock stops on the front axle to stop the wheels catching but you will lose a little steering lock, alternatively you can fit wheel spacers.

Mine had an identical set-up to yours when I bought it. I was duped by the previous owner who sold me it with a duff gearbox so fortunately I replaced the gearbox AND the disco transfer box as |I was having to slip the clutch a little to pull away....much MUCH better with the standard box/transfer fitted ! I also had the tyres touching when on almost full lock...don't even try adjusting ( or replacing with longer versions ) the lock-stops........you'll need wheel spacers....transformed my lock etc Been there, done it :)

Hi did you find it to high geared, is there that much differance between 70 and 75s.i think its either change tranny or tires.

adjust your lock stops before you g fitting wide boy spacers.

Unless thats the look your going for.

I have bigger size tyres than all of you and mine dont rub without spacers

Hi not looking for the big wide boy look,is the 110 transfer box geared different to the standard 90 tranny so it can run on 750

I found the same when i put disco tranny in my 110 running 7.50 x 16, gearing is a bit high specially noticeable in 1st/2nd high range. Better off keeping the standard one.

Might be less noticeable in a 90 with the lower weight.

My 300TDi 90 runs a Disco transfer-box & 265/75x16's and it works perfectly. It never feels over-geared and it allows effortless motorway cruising, I generally leave it in 4th and rely on 5th more as an overdrive but the engine is so flexible that it will pull a high gear from very low revs and is responsive enough for spirited overtaking when the need arrises.

Don't forget that 265/75x16 was a factory fit option on the 90 for many years and are actually very close in diameter to 7.50x16's anyway (they both use the blue speedo drive-gear).
Adjusting the lock-stops is the first action to take but once again, this is entierely down to the type of wheels fitted as the offset can be different. I have ZU's which replaced the old Weller Modulars and the offset on both types of wheel was the same so no adjustment was necessary (I only had to adjust this when I first removed the original steel-rims). My turning circle is excellent and allows me to do a U-turn in my cul-de sac (without bumping up the kerb) when many car-drivers to 3-point turns.

No its the same 200, 300 tdi and td5 and disco 1 are the same 1.4 FD Ratio, the one you want for the bigger tyres etc is the 1.6fd drive that came in some Special vehicles its rare as rocking horse poo!! lol

Hi Ginge,

Na thats not the looks I was going for, It was on my list to check the lock stops the only reason I asked about the spacer just incase the guy who put the wheels on mine before me got the offset wrong!! lol ;)

Disco (at least mine, a '97 300tdi) has 1.2 transfer box ...

I was speaking to one of the guys in transmissions the other day because I was thinking of going bigger tyres etc, he explained to me the only the later discos had 1.2, there may have been a crossover period but not sure, all defenders had 1.4 ie with exception to some early defenders, military and specials were they had 1.6 then defender came into line with disco, but you cant use all later disco transfer boxes as it is missing the little finger to connect the difflock lever to on top of the t box and the output of the main gear lever is different to

I'm not sure if your t box has been changed to be more "highway" friendly but you have me confused now so i'm going to look it up lol

Nope, bog standard, R380 mated to L230 1.4 transfer for 300 Tdi .. dunno about 200 but I was also under the impression that all Discoveries were 1.2 .. it's a well-known 'thing' to change them to 1.4 defender boxes when, like me, you put on larger tyres or tow heavy items regularly .. I do both but haven't changed the box yet, but have one to do, gonna refurb it first.

Paul, you are right I got confused, all disco has always been 1.2, defender except specials and some military were always 1.4 and special and military being 1.6, then in 07 defender came in line with disco so it changed to a 1.2 t box.
