Ok, I may be making some big assumptions here but I'm pretty sure our alarm is original, sonic sensors inside, flashes after locking and so on so what would be the best way to test it?

I figured locking it with a window open, setting the alarm and then sticking my arm through the window may work...but it didn't ;)

That's the way, of just sit inside and set the alarm.

yep sit inside sit still lock it then move about...also lock the car with fob, then unlock the door with keys.

pop bonnet set alarm then open bonnet

If it's a similar system to the one on my rangie of about the same age then it seems to be smart enough to know you left the window open and ignores the ultrasonic

Old LR alarm systems are not that smart, it just the ultrasonic movement detector has lost it sensitivity, as they do.

What we do or did is shake a bunch of keys at the detector to test them, but now days ultrasonics are combined with passive infrared in the security industry.
